No it sits around the perimeter of the Fraim glass which prevents its movement and on the Fraim itself with close tolerances but with enough of a gap laterally to enable fingertips to lift it off the Fraim
I have two Lyra Atlas Lambda cartridges (SL + Mono) and a Dynavector XV-1s, plus a Koetsu Rosewood out for retip. Between those and three tonearms and a very expensive turntable I leave nothing to chance. I don’t count on my homeowners policy (which has a $3K deductible), but use a personal articles policy (PAP). I’m in the middle of revising my PAP to remove all the Naim electronics and my speakers and just include the turntable, tonearms, and cartridges. Those are the risky items (i.e. from user error). As for the rest (Naim, speakers, etc) those are more prone to catastrophic failure (theft, fire, etc) and my homeowner’s policy is good enough. The retail cost of my TT, three arms, and four cartridges is about $90k, and that’s before the tariff increases coming this month.
If I did to my Lyra Atlas what you did to your Rega cartridge it would cost me about $7k retail to send it back to Japan for a rebuild.
FWIW: I fit the stylus guards on my cartridges and secure the tonearms to their rests with rubber bands if I am doing anything around the turntable other than playing records. My wife also knows to ask if I have those guards fitted before she takes the vacuum cleaner in the listening room. She does not dust the gear racks either. I do that. We have a routine that we both stick to, to avoid tears.
You can have the Ania rebuilt by Soundsmith in NY (USA). I did the same thing to my Ania Pro. Soundsmith upgraded cantilever & stylus and it sounds great. The retipping service will not work in your case. I upgraded to a Boron cantilever with a clear line stylus, outstanding upgrade!!
Check out their website here; retipper@sound-smith.com
Good luck ![]()
Do they really, really completely replace the cantilever, or do they slip one on over a stub of the old cantilever. There are other “retippers” who do exactly that and it changes the cartridge. Whether it’s for the better or worse, one has to decide, but doesn’t seem like a good thing to me.
I had my Dv XV-1s sent back to japan for an official rebuild. I would do the same with my two Lyra cartrigges.
In the case of my Koetsu, that was something a dealer threw away and I rescued from their trash bin. It still had the stylus stuck to the cantilever, but pushed through and barely hanging on by the glue. Jospeh Long (the groovetickler) said he could reattach it to the cantilever for $200, so that’s what I’m doing. It was free otherwise.
There are not many cartridge rebuilders in the states, however Peter Lederman (Sound-Smith.com) has over 50 years in cartridge rebuilding and design.
His cartridges are well known all over the world. He has a couple dedicated retippers working with him, however it is a small business in New York. They will give you an honest appraisal when you send in your cartridge and no, they do not glue cantilever’s over top a broken/misaligned stylus. For the boron/CL upgrade on a Rega Ania Pro it will cost 485.00, or there abouts. Not cheap, but half the price of a new one. You do have options, much cheaper than buying another new cartridge. Cheers!!
