It the end of Year list time again, and perusing the Guardians top 50, I can say that I have heard of five or six of the artists, but I cannot recall hearing any of the top 50 albums.
A similar thought came to mind when I read the list.. but the ‘pastural absurdism’ album was added to my ‘listen to later’ playlist. Disappointed to see the second Ethel Cain album of this year make the list, ‘Perverts’ was a much more interesting release to me.
Yes, I must be living on a different planet. There are only a few artists names that I recognize and I am pretty sure that I have not listened to any of the albums listed.
I am another who is certainly out of touch with the modern music n general, certainly mainstream as you get in the charts/awards. Unsurprising as when I do hear anything on popular radio it just so rare for it to make me the slightest bit interestied in hearing again or knowing more about. But it doesn’t bother me at all. There is s much other music that I could buy if I wanted more, and occasionally do, and that includes things released in the past decade or whatever, just not likely mainstream stuff.
About 80% of the stuff in there I have no interest whatsoever so it does not bother me. Generational thing. Mostly pop, rap, etc.
Record companies and streaming services are having a field day!
I’ve heard of some of these artists and heard very little of their music so I might give some a whirl. Meanwhile I’ll continue to get some musical tips from the threads here on naim and note that my daughter, home from Uni, was playing Gordon Lightfoot while my son, slightly older, was listening to CCR and King Crimson!
The top rated albums of the year from various sources aren’t always my style but I try to listen to them. There are usually interesting and high quality and sometimes it is good to step out of your listening comfort zone.
This year, as always, I have found albums that I initially missed or ignored that have become purchases.
I guess if I saw a year-end list from (say) 1980 a fair chunk wouldn’t appeal so I suspect I was not more or less out of touch then (aged 15) than now.
Best, not biggest selling methinks. I’ve got 5 of the top 10 but only another 7 of the remainder. Wouldn’t argue greatly against the Rosalia album as it is excellent, but would put Geese as my top album this year
Well, looks like I did quite well as there are 24 artists names I recognise, although nowhere near that number whose work I’m familiar with. Thought I may have done a bit better as Spotify Wrapped gave me a listening age of 21 !!! Unlike my two sons aged 29 and 30 whose Spotify listening age was given as 73 and 69
Maybe 63 is the new 21
