Help with a NAP 160, thanks

I enclose the pics of two different NAP 160s I’ve seen for sale. One is from 1982, the other from 1984.
Can someone tell me what the thing in the earler version, close to the 4-pin DIN socket is, and if the unit is ‘ok’?
Thanks very much,
M

It’s the preamp power supply cap with the original rectifier/regulator board retained & fitted to the top of the cap. The newer unit has the same thing, but mounted separately.
Both have been serviced at some point, but the newer one looks more likely to have been serviced by Naim.

Regards
Neil.

Thanks. Both are advertised as serviced by Class A, but in different times.

The earlier one uses BDY56 power transistors, which in my experience of early NAP160 and NAP110 will sound “better”

I believe Class A, like Naim, keep records of all equipment that they have serviced, so if you contact them with the serial number they may be able to check what work they did.

From a long time CB160 user, highly recommended!

Something to consider.

Carbon film resistors are used in the earlier unit.

Metal film resistors are used in the later unit.

I’d go for the metal film resistors.

One day I also need a 160…

The later 160s also have a differently rated PSU don’t they?

I’ve bought the earlier one. The reason is sadly simple: it’s in Germany, the later one in the UK. It would have cost me 40% more because of shipment and import taxes. 30 minutes of ferry have become more complex and costly than from the other side of the world…

@NeilS
Thanks, I’ll contact them.

@RichardPW
That’s good news, thanks.

Darran @Class A kindly and quickly confirmed that the 160 was serviced by them, albeit in 2014 not 8/9 years ago. Thanks for the hint.

So is the one in the picture above you bought? It looks neater to me

Yes, the one from 1982, serviced in 2014. And I like the color of the transformer…

Well done Max!
It’ ll be fun comparing the 160 with 90, my 250s and forthcoming Olive 140

The smiley within the “Terry” signature is nice, too.
