HiCap AUX Output to Powered Subwoofer – Is My Connection Correct?

Hi everyone,

I’d like to check if my current HiCap connection is correct.

My system is:

  • NAC 102

  • HiCap

  • NAPSC

  • NAP 180

I’m currently connecting:

  • HiCap Socket 4 → NAC 102 (power)

  • HiCap Socket 2 → NAP 180 (signal)

  • HiCap Socket 1 (AUX Output) → Powered subwoofer (line-level RCA input)

The subwoofer powers on automatically when music is playing and works normally. The NAP 180 and the main speakers also work perfectly with no noise or other issues.

Is this the correct and safe way to connect a powered subwoofer to a HiCap? Or is there a better or recommended method for adding a subwoofer to a NAC 102 / HiCap / NAP 180 system?

I think my answer to this question would be more accurate if i knew the actual subwoofer you are using.

Thanks. I’m using a Klipsch R-12SW. It only has RCA line-level inputs (L/LFE and R). I’m using a 4-pin DIN to RCA cable from the HiCap AUX Output (Socket 1) to the subwoofer. Everything seems to work normally. Does this sound like the correct way to connect it?

This is the correct way to connect. However, it’s important to use a proper subwoofer lead, with the right resistance, as the the Hicap is not designed to drive long leads. To the best of my knowledge the lead should be slugged with a 100R resistor at the Hicap end. I’d check with Naim or your dealer to ensure it’s done correctly.

As @HungryHalibut has said, you have it connected correctly. But you absolutely should have the lead slugged with a 100R resistor, otherwise you run a serious risk of causing damage to your HiCap.

My cable is only about 1 metre long.

The HICAP will likely be fine, but it can easily run into instability trying to run with a cable that’s too long, so performance will be adversely impacted.

The slugged cable being discussed is needed when it’s long, so you should be fine as long as the short cable allows you to position the sub correctly. Naim’s slugged cables were available in 5 and 10 metre lengths.
