HiFi rack with three levels

Yes making specific claims about how it sounds makes my marketing BS sensor go off too.

Technically, that components may both generate microphonics under load and behave differently when subject to them is sometimes found in a normal spec sheet. I’ve one batch of Panasonic surface mount caps where the spec sheet indicates both.

But being able to measure or technically justify it isn’t the same thing as hearing it. I do find a stable rack helps and I can probably describe it on a per system basis, not a global sweeping statement true in all scenarios.

I find where rack makers are missing an important offering is for non hifi levels. Like a drawer level or door cabinet level. I quite like horizontal layout but I probably don’t want to dust the lower levels of a Quadraspire triple width AV rack. Especially as I might prefer to use the lewer levels for things like remotes, headphones, vinyl brushes, game controllers etc etc. And I don’t want the visual clutter of after market feet or plinths with a non Hifi cabinet.

They are really missing a need I feel.

Hi all,

Thought I’d update the thread on the outcome and ask a few more questions.

As the new system is still very new, 332’s not even here yet, I want to spend a good 6 months letting it run and and getting used to it before I spend any significant new money on speakers, rack or cables.

So, on cables I am using some basic Chord cables that I had in the loft; on the rack I have ordered a very low cost 3-level rack from Custom Designs (thanks for the recommendations) and I continue to use my Iotas.

Once this has all settled in I will upgrade as necessary based on listening.

Now the questions.

I see from other threads that some people have a modest sized TV on the top shelf. Logistically that would be useful for me as I will face the same direction when I listen and (occasionally) watch.

Is this to be avoided from a SQ point of view? I guess I could try with and without, plus I am not sure how it would look? But I would need to order a new level if I did try it.

Also, in terms of order of equipment on the rack, I have ordered a 275mm mid-level (to keep the 250 away from the preamp/streamer) and 2x 150mm levels.

I was thinking of having the 332 on top, does that make sense, does it even matter?

Apologise if these questions are a bit trivial

Thx,
Tony

Last point probably best asked in a separate thread

Preamp on top has always worked best for me, including my 332.

I wouldn’t put a TV on the rack. Get a proper wall mounting bracket - all TVs are compatible with them these days and you’ll be able to put it at exactly the right height and position, regardless of the HiFi rack.

Agreed, deleted and reposted.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

I got a crazy deal on a Custom Designs rack, which came today, I’ve built it and the equipment sound much better than the IKEA steel & glass table I had been using.

The whole sound seems much more planted, if that makes sense.

Very happy.

I will properly look at Fraim et al in a year or so, once the 332 comes and everything beds in.

Pics below, aesthetics are personal of course, but I like it :slightly_smiling_face:
