Hifi we should have kept

I sold my Zenith Mk3 today. It was a brilliant device that did everything consistently well and that sounded excellent but I couldn’t justify keeping it just as a server. It got me thinking of other hifi I’ve sold but wished I’d kept, an old beautifully made JVC amp back in the 80s and my first Unitiqute 2 and the Guru Junior speakers I used with that were so much fun to listen to. Im sure most if us have something we wish we’d kept

My LP12 (broken up for spares) and Ruark Sabres (blown up by the person I gave them too)

A Michell Technodec that I should have added a TechnoArm and better cartridge like an Ortofon Black

Only my Mk1 Kans. Traded for Sara’s. In turn traded for SBL’s. The Kans are the only speakers (hifi) I miss. My Piegas are better (I think - who knows?) but the Kans hold such great memories.

I agree with that. I loved the MKI Kans that I used with a 32/HI-CAP/250 in the 80s and 90s. With the right recordings, they sounded fantastic but the could be unforgiving, particularly when used with a CD player. I traded them in for a pair of IBLs and subsequently SBLS, which I still have.

I’m still using my 32.5/hiCap/250 chrome bumper and that I have to say is one decision I’ve never regretted. My Kans were gone before my CD arrived so I’ve no experience of CD harshness. My SBLs arrived before IBLs were released other wise I would have bought a pair. SBLs sound great but the 3 box thing/gaskets is just too messy for me. My Piega’s like Kans (easier than Kans tbf) can be moved around easily & I value that. But SBLs are a great sounding speaker. I had Mk1 black ones just out of interest. Not the best finish. Black Saras were beautifully finished. Piega’s are beautifully finished. Ramble over.

I should have kept my lp12 which I sold for a song when lp’s went out of fashion. It would have saved me having to buy another one now LP’s are back in.

I wish I had kept my Michell Focus 1 turntable and Crimson elektrik 510/520 amp.

Dynaudio floorstanders. My young children had damaged the tweeters and I didn’t realise that the tweeter could be replaced. Live and learn.

Erm… nothing…? I still have my ‘original’ LP12 (mostly…) from 1981 - and my NAP250 & HiCap from 1985/86.

I resolved my slight regret at trading my 42-5 & 110, by later buying (pre-loved) a 72 & 140 - both of which I have still. Maybe my Linn Kans…?

42.5/110/HC, sold for more than (1984) sold in 2002 for more than I had paid

Linn Axis when I got a basic LP12 as a student (friendly bank manager probably helped).

Would have loved to have keptvthe Axis as a second.

The only thing I can think of was a pair of KEF B139 bass drivers from my second (DIY) speakers, subsequently built into a (not very effective) attempt at a sub, and dumped during a house move. A later speaker used that same driver, and an amp fault taking out a driver meant I had to source a replacement.

Rega P25, a typically brilliant Rega deck that punched well above weight, to usher in a self imposed 5 year departure from vinyl.

I had a pair of Ruark Icon loudspeakers in Cherry, which not only sounded good, but looked good too.

Probably my Kan II with stands but I’d still be using my Kudos X3s. :+1:t2:

It is a nice server, but I can’t help thinking that a much cheaper alternative Ropieee/Raspberry Pi does offer similar functionality with a quieter USB output, and (probably) better SQ.

Now back to the topic, I really regretted selling my Linn Kan 2/Nac 32.5/Nap 250, now my HIFI system cost multiple times over, but somehow I am not entirely happy? The Michael Hedges’ Aerial Boundaries on vinyl never sounded that good with the CD or hires Qobuz streaming.
