High pitched sound coming from my 552DR!

Hi,

I think my 552DR is broken as this morning I came downstairs and there was a persistent high pitch sound coming from my speakers with mute on and mute off.

I’ve isolated the issue to the 552. ChatGPT tells me it could be s relay switch problem.

Could that be true?

The item is from 2003, but was serviced and upgraded to DR about 5 years ago - I would presume a service would not address the relay switch.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Jon

Could you explain how you’ve isolated it to the 552? Presumably you’ve tried turning the whole system off and then on again.

Yes, I powered all off, disconnected interconnects, ruled out the NAP500 as still got the expected -albeit quieter - hiss.

Then turn on the 552, followed by the 500. Piercing high pitch. Did the same, after removing the interconnect from the 552 to its PS, sound goes.

So the transmission from the 552 to the 500 causes the sound.

I know folk cuss ChatGPT, but it makes sense as the 552 was originally from 2003.

Is my hypothesis on the right track? I kind of regret immensely playing musical statues with my daughters, by pressing the mute.

So a faulty mute relay could be the problem?

Cheers,

Jon

And for good reason. It’s not designed to tell you the intricacies of how to connect up a Naim system, or what fault might have occurred. It’s an AI model. It’s quite good at summarising content, which I might use it for on occasion, but nothing else.

If you have a fault, switch it off and contact your dealer.

If there are no sources connected to the 552, do you still get the noise? If you do, then it does sound very much as though it’s the 552 at fault. I assume you have double checked that the 552 Burndy and Snaic are correctly inserted.

A high pitched squeal through the system is usually down to a faulty or misconnected SNAIC or Burndy pin.

I would try substituting a different SNAIC5 if you have one and also carefully checking the Burndy cable pins to ensure that you haven’t got one that has sunk and not making proper contact. Do be sure only to disconnect and reconnect with no power going through the system.

As to whether it could be the mute relay, I’m not sure, but I know a man who might well know… @NeilS

Thanks Richard,

I think this could be it, and I will show s couple of pictures. It’s unpleasant having to turn the power amp off and on, but if you see my cables:

The high pitched sound only came when the cable was right way, not the opposite way. I then reversed the direction, no sound. Tried again, high pitch, reversed, no sound i.e. music, (incidentally everything else is working as I have the DAC-V1 playing the music, originating from the Core to the NDS.)

Now I’ve got the cable back in the right direction, see picture and there’s no sound from any input on the 552.

So I’ve either broken the 552 or the cable is faulty and needs to be repaired!!

Jon

I’d stick the standard SNAIC5 back in and see if that sorts the problem out. Discussion around the Chord cabke is limited due to forum rules, but from the look of it, a trip back to Chord is due.

That does not look like a SNAIC. I would replace it with the proper item. Using anything other than proper Naim SNAICs or Burndy cables can cause issues and even damage the equipment.

Ok cheers!

I don’t get it. You have a 300 amp but only one channel connected to the 552? Are you supposed to have Sarum on out from the two lower outputs on 552PS to the 300 amp and then a black snaic between 552ps and 552 head unit which is the connector next to the Burndy on the 552ps.

If you look closely at the first picture you can just about see the other channel cable connected to socket 2. It’s hidden behind the ‘SNAIC5’ connected to the Digital PS socket.

This won’t be a relay issue. Far more likely to be a cable problem.

Regards
Neil.
