I have Sennheiser 650s and they’re starting to smell . I’ve read I can use rubbing alcohol or a mild soap solution. Is that right ? I don’t want to ruin the pads …
Are your pads velour or leather? Leather can be sponged with soap & water or alcohol and water. Velour, I’m not sure. But replacement pads are available.
Hi Stokie, thanks so much for replying. They’re velour. I should have specified. I didn’t know there were two kinds. Leather can be gently brushed, but I have no idea how to treat velour. I’m afraid brushing would damage the fabric. Also, if I use liquid, it will absorb it and more damage can occur I guess. I feel like I’m treating my earpads like a newborn infant…
If it were me, I would just get some replacements. The foam will shrink and deform anyway so replacement is recommended from time to time. I replaced the ear pads and headband padding on my own HD600s a couple of years back. I originally bought the HD600s in the late '90s so I guess approx. 20 years is their useable life. Sennheiser are really good about keeping replacement parts such as these available, so take advantage of that.
As Richard advised with velour I’d just replace them. Its good that decent brands offer replaceable parts.
I had a similar problem when i bought a pair of Beyerdynamic headphones off Ebay for a good price. I wanted to sterilise them, so I rubbed them with Hydrogen peroxide, before washing in water with just a touch of soap. It was Ok for an interim period, but replacement is the way to go.
I bought a new pair of ear pads from Beyer. Sennheiser should have them on their site. in the UK Audio Sanctuary usually genuine replacements.
Do not buy third party as it will alter the sound, usually in a bad way
replace them with leather and all good…
Not a good idea. The pads are part of the headphone tuning, so it is pretty essential to replace the pads with the same original pads.
agreed but i replaced mine with dekoni leather pads for the better…
Thanks everyone !
I think I’ll get the pads replaced with Sennheiser parts.
