Was the phono stage in your 282 MM or MC?

Did they say what they did to cure the hum? I’m so relieved not having to hear hum these days but most of my OC boxes have had different levels of hum. Some rather horrible to be honest.
I reckon on 7-10 days for full on-song, but 48-72hrs is usually enough to get 90% of the way there.

The phono stage in the 282 was built in with the option of MM or MC at order, but that was for the earliest models I suspect which were very much like the 82 that preceded the 282. This built in path was dropped but I don’t know when. Whilst it is a few years ago (and my memory is fading) I think you could pre-program the source selection on the front panel. That is similar to the 252 and 552, but for these you need an external phono stage specific to MM or MC which takes its power from the power Aux if I remember correctly.

Never heard of a built in phono on these models. My 252 is an early one ( serviced now) but I cant see any facility to add a built in phono card. Wonder how many other 282s or 252s had or still have this facility? Does @Richard.Dane know?

The NAC282 and NAC252 both had a powered AUX2 socket (as did the NAIT5, NAC112/122x, NAC202 and NAC552) which enabled you to easily add a Stageline, Prefix or Superline for Phono duties. None of these (NAC282 included) had internal phono board facility like the earlier Olive series.

It was just a standard SC service, which was due. Given that it had not hummed before and there was no change in the house that might have initiated humming, I proceeded with the hope that the service would return the unit to its non-humming former state. So far that has been the case.

Here we go again……picked up the 252 / SCDR to try at home……thanks for all your comments, definitely going to give it more time before making a judgement……

I went SN3 to 282 (ultimately with SCDR) and finally to 252 and I am very happy with where I am now. The overarching qualities that the 252 bring over the two previous iterations are lack of fatigue and detail. Certainly there is more detail to the presentation than with the 282, but importantly for me - I listen for long periods - is that the sound is markedly less fatiguing. My 252 is a 2018 model so I had it serviced at Class A (£299) essentially because I’d decided to keep it long term and didn’t expecting much to change but in fact I sensed a noticeable improvement in SQ. So for me the upgrades have been well worth it. I am convinced that, at least in my system, the 252 is a significant improvement over the 282 (even with SCDR).

Been running the 252/SCDR since Saturday night - not sure what went wrong when I tried this before and ended up not liking it at all….this time I can’t stop listening to it, absolutely loving it.
To me, it sounds like a grown up 282, sounding refined but still completely musically engaging. Looks like I’m going to have to treat myself!
I wonder if it was my speakers / power setup that didn’t work well as a combination with it before.

252/300 is a classic combination, glad it has worked out for you.
As I said above I loved mine, just a more mature sound than the 282 and an easy final destination pre amp wise.

I’ve noticed throughout the years trying many products that you often listen with different ears at first when you put the new product in the system. Very critical analyzing ears that can get stuck listening on certain frequencies or how a drum stick sounds for 20 minutes back and forth. Once you let go of the critical ear listening and start to listen to MUSIC that’s when you start to listen to the system in the right way. Do you love and get engaged with what you hear or are you often changing tracks or even stop listening. Listening under time pressure is also bad. You very well need a week or two so settle with bigger changes.

I could have lived with my 282 SC and been happy. But I had the chance to move on to the 252, and am glad I did. I’m perfectly happy with my “end game” HiFi.
