I’ve heard a story about a Ferrari dealer who, back in the days of the screaming 308s, declined to fit an ICE system in the cars they sold for precisely this reason
Yes I’ve done a full install in my ‘yoof’ when I owned a Peugeot 306 Gti. The system was as follows;
Pioneer CD head unit. Which had Burr Brown DACS and three 6 volt pre outs. 3 interconnects were therefore running to the amplifier in the boot so I had full control over front, rear and sub channels.
Alpine PDX 5 channel class D amplifier
Alpine Component speakers in the front doors
Alpine Component speakers on a purpose built MDF rear parcel shelf
Alpine 12 inch Subwoofer in the boot.
Doors fully sound deadened
Boot floor fully sound deadened
I also bought the adapter so the stalk control on the car operated the headunit.
Full cost for all the hardware alone was somewhere in the region of 3.5k back in the early noughties, not including the many hours I spent installing it.
Was it worth it? Absolutely yes, I’m glad I did it but will probably never do it again, as much as I’d like to. The audio quality in that 306 was easily trouncing 60k cars of that period with premium systems from (insert name of supposed premium manufacturer approved audio system upgrade option of your choice) and by a large margin. In fact I’m still yet to hear anything that comes close. Having said that, I haven’t experienced a luxury Bentley, for example. The fact of the matter is, even the manufacturer premium upgrade options are still on an extremely stringent budget and they mostly suck and are full of compromises. The subwoofers they install are especially rubbish in comparison to after market.
The sound deadening I applied was fantastic and totally required in any serious build.
Windows down and let everyone know you have a serious system.
Windows up and no one could tell you were having a blast.
I used to commute through Reading in my earlier days. If any of you know Reading you will know its one massive bottleneck. I used to kick back stuck in traffic and listen to some Bob Marley, enjoying that marvellous bass on that 12 inch sub.
