I got bored listening to Stop Making Sense

In addition to reading the review, I actually listened to

  • My ‘99 180g pressing vs the Restoration 2LP pressing
  • The orginal CD rip at 16/44.1 vs the Restoriation release 24/44.1
  • And then went and found/acquired the Blu-ray rip

My goto LP continues to be the ‘99 180g reissue (i.e. not from the remaster digitial files) and then for electronic playback on the NDS/Roon and via Roon ARC, the Bluray rip of the entire concert.

However I have seen the Restoration movie twice, once at the time of release and subsequently - fabulous.

It is amusing to parse this thread.

“That kit was boring.”

“You were listening to the wrong version.”

No support for my

  • you can’t just judge kit in passing when in a hifi shop. A home dem is the minimum.
  • the original album isn’t actually that good.

Spent some time this morning trawling for reviews of the original album. They consistently go with “too short”, “destroys the film concept” etc. More interesting are the audiophile reviews of the original. Words like “threadbare”, “lacking in the shimmer of traditional live albums and any sense you were there”, “too smooth”.

I do have to apologize to the assembled, this thread is not my best moment here at Naim Forum. A pivot from one definitive to another, conflated reengineering with remastering…if I have the chance I will go back and listen to the same setup with the original SMS…

I do stand by my strong original impression, regardless of cause. And the reviews about the original album don’t bother me - it still makes me dance.
