I regret ever listening to Edith Piaf
I don’t know who that is but the name Edith suggests they are 110 years old
Famous song you will have heard at some point “Je ne regrette rien”.
Not a criticism in itself of course.
An 8 box Cyrus system with Mission 753. Thin and lifeless.
One lives and learns.

I auditioned the 753s having read the reviews and was very disappointed. Was then pointed towards the 752s by the dealer which were to my ears a far better speaker.
I agree. Even the 751 was better!

Tracking a set of these on fleabay to start a small system for my lad.
The 753s were alright but they needed a large room and a lot of amplification to control them. They only really worked on the end of something like an 82/180 or Arcam Delta 290 and at that level you might as well have gone for a Linn or Naim speaker.
A similar priced Linn Keilidh was in a different league and worked with more modest amps that the 753 didn’t.
Indeed the 752 was an order of magnitude easier to work with and worked off a Nait3 quite happily and was unfussy about the room.
It’s what I use today. Stunning speaker with a couple of foibles but superbly made down to the drivers (Freedom version with silk dome tweeter). The 753 looks impressive and continues to fetch more on the second hand market. It uses far cheaper made drivers with stamped steel chassis. Still, it looks more impressive to many, especially new hifi users on limited budgets which think more drivers automatically means better sound.
They replaced Stirling Broadcast BBC Ltd Editions LS3/6’s.
As a teenager in the 1970’s, I ‘upgraded’ my Wharfedale Lintons to a pair of Goodmans because they were…more expensive and bigger. Lesson learned rather quickly.
When it comes to hi-fi, I earned a Ph.D. in FAFO. I found my sound though, and it is so much about its intelligibility within my own nervous system. Others don’t seem that interested in hifi that way. When I think of the journey in those terms, regrets don’t make sense. I do wish I knew that after a while, speaker placement is dominant over electronics.
I had that Teleton when I was young with it’s massive 8W per channel.
Very good it was too.
For the money, even then it was a complete bargain.
Rare post by me.
I sometimes regret ever going down the Hi Fi route where reality has rarely matched expectation, thing is though, when it does ‘work’ (mainly on sundays!
) i realise there’s no way out.
To answer the question, when I had a 32.5 hicap, I went from a 140 to a 250(into IBLs) Front was an old Logic 101 with an ittok and a very dodgy looking Troika, I regretted this because shortly afterwards a mate was selling a pair of 135’s, I made the mistake of borrowing them……..good grief it all sounded brilliant, I couldn’t justify the cost of swapping( I knew this before I borrowed them so I only had myself to blame but I couldn’t imagine they’d be so good). I never really got over it and pushed by clinical depression (too much information?)sold the lot a few months later.
Slowly got a system back together and now on State pension, can’t do the record player and speakers things I’d like to do.
I wonder what happened to that lovely old SABA radiogram I had way back ![]()
Great to read all the stuff on here guys.
I’ll slip back into the ether now
I regret buying my ProAc D48R . Not because of the sound but because of waiting weeks and weeks for them, paying extra for Rosewood that looked nothing like Rosewood, but some weird brown color. I was pissed off. Next was the Mark Levinson no. 585.5 integrated amp . I bought it as a one box solution but the DAC wasn’t great, although the amp sounded excellent, and I lost money selling it on.
Indeed. The 752s were the best sounding of that range, i really enjoyed mine on the end of a CD3/NAC92/90.3. I never really took to the 753, even bi-amped with rather muscular power amps. To me, they sounded like car HiFi compared with the 752s.
On that note, despite being very highly reviewed, the Mission 753 were not for me in any way, and so regretted purchasing them from the outset.
CD3/92/90 into 752 was one of the absolute best bang for buck systems of the mid 90s.
There were some low cost KEF Codas that we’re basically interchangeable for anyone that wasn’t keen on the Mission sound. They could basically be swapped in and save the buyer £150 to put towards a FC. The 752s being a bit more neutral and refined (and importantly, available in rosewood or cherry).
I find it sad there is no low cost proper separates getting on point for many UK brands now.
I would look at Fell from Mike’s brother.
Low cost, made in the UK , meet that requirement. I don’t think they offer a streamer , but with the costs of WiiM and BlueSound that isn’t an issue
They’ve had a Fell Stream “coming soon” for a couple years. If it ever sees the light of day, that might be a nice match for a refurbished A60
