Impressions with new FW (3.11.0 and other generations...)

thank you for your perseverance and for the update about naim , in fact in my case the same dsf on usb works fine on an old cambridge streamer and with gap on ndx2

I actually ended up getting the MOFI SACD version of I-Robot in the end, which sounds better anyway to me (it’s a different mix I believe). I wondered about getting the new box set, but I have a lovely Japanese LP pressing plus the SACD and the DSF file, so more than enough really.

A few years ago, I figured out how to extract the dsd files from my SACD collection. I had been playing them with gapless playback through my old ND5XS 2 since 2021 and on my recently purchased NSC222 (February of this year) so I knew I was right. It’s a pity it took the dealer to get involved for it to be taken seriously but if they fix it, I’ll be delighted.

That is the master question…

Fact is - there is still something not well witch fw - as such tweaks seems to have so much effect

I hope @Darkebear has still the time to relax and enjoy the music. Personally it would throw me to a hospital room. :joy:

Well DB’s setting tweaks have been very helpful when positivity is in short supply IMO. The HDMI one is great!

But fundamentally something has been added (I believe) to the Software post the 3.8’s that has taken away some of the previous analogue like presentation. Ok many folk really like 11. Fair enough! But I wonder which FW my hifi hero Roy G will be listening to at home .

I spoke to Jas G yesterday and he told me that the excellent Paul B in IT has tore his calf muscle very badly (wishing you a swift recovery PB) which might delay next release somewhat but still not too far away. Fingers crossed for a good one :index_pointing_up:

Just adding best wishes for Paul here!

As for the tweaks, I’ve had everything off for a while now (except Qobuz, which I use) and am happier with it like that. I have found DBs sharing of his tweaks both useful and insightful.

Why did you sue Qobuz?

Till Qobuz has not refunded his money, Michael leaves Qobuz open, before closing the case.

This week I have added an EE1 plus to my system (in between my EE8 switch and NSS333). I was already quite satisfied with the FW 5.3.0, but the EE1 Plus has taken my system to even a higher level (comparable to FW 3.8)

That’s ND555 sw numbers? My 333 is on 5.3.

Yes you are right, 5.3.0 indeed. I have updated my post

So you have a similar feeling in the change of sound on 333? I have only experienced 5.3 without and now with 555PSDR.

Yes I have my NSS 333 (connected to NPX 300) already for 1,5 year and with each FW I have experienced changes in sound quality

When Naim release next update can @drago be the first to test :joy:

This will never happen :rofl::rofl::smiling_face:

But I will definitely be a tester (of a critical nature) or… who knows.

I’ve never understood this HDMI discussion since the ND5XS2 / NDX2 / ND555 don’t even have HDMI input, so there is nothing to change right? Toggling a switch doesn’t translate to anything hardware wise on these units. It’s probably a generic switch for the Nova or something?

But on the other hand, I’ve seen (and heard) stranger things..

I’d still like to try the factory reset on both my ND5XS2 and NDS. From post 2188 I know how to do this on the ND5XS2, but how can you do a full factory reset on the NDS? Is it similar to the ND5XS2?

EDIT: Note to self: I need to do a little digging first.. Found it in the user manual (section 4.10) and can be done on the main display itself.

For nds a hardware reset should not be necessary I think. But you can try.

I have just acquired an NDX2 / XPS DR ā€˜new/old stock’ from a dealer, unused in sealed boxes. It’s running 3.7.0 and sounds fantastic - much warmer, smoother and engaging (among many other dramatic improvements) than my previous ND5XS2 running 3.11.0. I’m thinking of leaving it running the legacy FW, but of course I then have no internet radio access, nor additional features such as Qobuz Connect etc. To be frank I can live without these, and definitely don’t want the trauma of FW upgrade upsetting the sound again.

Should I stick - or twist?

Would your dealer allow you to compare with another NDX 2 on a later firmware?
