Hi,
Don’t want to pen a silly fridge thread again.
But ![]()
I bought a new led lamp which has a 12v/1A charger as psu. This charger is standard and plugged into socket in the same room - not the same socket as the HiFi stuff.
Does this effect overall? Pollute?
I have ordered a ifi power 2 with 12v for mind peace. Does it have any effect at all at „source“ side? Thought that a less noisy psu could be better - even at my lamp.
Is it? ![]()
These chargers and everything in plugs/wall warts, TV’s, radio’s, microwaves, cookers, fridges, LED lamps …. everything …. are SMPS powered.
We all have them everywhere ….. Stop thinking about them, especially anything thats not connected to your hifi, you will sleep better, your bank account will be happier and your hifi will sound just the same.
The only thing I do is to suppress the 230v and DC power on everything thats connected to the hifi (router, switch etc} with selected frequency range ferrite clamps.
Just because something it putting out electrical noise doesn’t necessarily mean that the noise is finding its way to your HiFi and causing problems. There are a number of things you can do to minimise the potential problems.
First, try to choose devices that are not too electrically noisy where possible. Better to eliminate the problem at source than trying to filter it out later.
The potentially noisy devices should be kept away from the HiFi as far as possible: this means keeping them physically distant, and also avoiding electrical connections by using separate mains circuits (different ring or radial circuits, not just different sockets) and network cables.
If in doubt, just turn off potentially noisy devices and listen for any changes. I find the best way to do this to be to turn off everything you can at the consumer unit. Play some music, then turn circuits back on one at a time. Obviously you will need to do this when nobody else is at home, or men in white coats may come and take you away. ![]()
You sure?
He’s certainly not far off the mark. Try, for example, finding an LED light fitting that doesn’t belt out a load of electrical noise. They do exist, but they are few and far between, and anything ‘smart’ such as IoT devices, lights that change hue or are dimmable etc. will be noisy.
Whoops… SMPS ….. ![]()
Phew.. thanks Mike
When you listen to the difference than you mind can do wonderftricks - that a few minutes before the white coats arrive ![]()
Reducing potential noise: for that reason I ordered the ifi psu. Maybe for peace of mind only. It’s a different socket, but can’t tell, it is a different circuit - don’t think so. All sockets are connected to the same fuse.
Oh dear - that’s exactly what the new lamp does.
. Can I tame that with a ifi psu?
Just make sure the lamp isn’t dimmed when listening to music.
Wise decision.
As you know FR is now using ifi to power his new lumin streaming bridge and reported a definate sonic improvement.
Bruce is using an ifi with his primare streaming bridge in his high end system and reported a significant sonic improvement.
SMPSs always negatively effecting SQ is just another urban myth.
I bought some iFi iPower wall warts a couple of years ago as I needed something to run some European bought items at home in the UK. I wasn’t impressed, they churned out quite a bit of noise despite their claims of technical wizardry.
But I don’t like it bright when listening ![]()
Yes … but can ifi also block letting noise out. Or only block letting it in?
They claim to use some clever tech to avoid generating noise, although that was not the case on the ones I used. Perhaps some of their models are better than others.

How is the noise effecting the system? Is it raising the noise floor, hiss or buzzing.
I was thinking yesterday (mind f…?) that the sound was a micron darker and less resolving in upper mids than without LED
These were powering network equipment that was a good distance away from the HiFi, on a different mains circuit, and had no copper wire connection to it, and I couldn’t detect any effect on sound quality from using them.
I try to buy things that are not electrically noisy because if you count every potentially noisy bit of equipment in your house, every light, wall wart, etc. there will likely be dozens, or even hundreds of them, so it feels like good practice to choose quiet ones.
Do you think in my case an ifi will help - with also letting less noise out. The lamp is powered by an usb charger - hope that ifi is better. But will I recognize? ![]()
