I use my 552/500 both for hifi via Roon and also to amplify the left and right channels of my 5.1 AV setup via the unity gain option on the 552. So in other words I use two inputs on my 552- the tuner input for streaming from the ND555, and the AV input from the preamp out (set for unity gain) for the left and right channels from my AV receiver.
Currently, I use a logitech Harmony remote to control the TV functions because it allowed me to run a script upon starting up my TV; it turns on the Sony TV, the Apple TV, the AV receiver, and crucially also switches the inputs on my 552 to the AV input via a small IR blaster placed on the rack near the 552. So in other words, the Harmony allows me to use a single remote handset and also switch to the correct input on the 552; I don’t have to have two remotes out, one to control the AV equipment and a second Naim remote to switch the inputs on the preamp.
However, Logitech end-of-lifed the Harmony ecosystem some time ago and, though it still works, I’m looking into whether I could control my whole system in the same fashion I do currently but using an Apple TV remote. I believe I can teach the Apple TV remote to use its IR learning function to map the mute button on the Apple TV remote to instead switch to the AV input on my 552. Then the Apple TV remote would control the rest of the AV system via CEC out of the Apple TV device. I haven’t tried setting this up yet but in theory it should work. However, this is not my question.
My question pertains to how to get the 552 to switch back to the Tuner input when I want to listen to music from the ND555 after having switched to the AV input to watch TV. I don’t want to have to use a Naim remote as I’m trying to only have one remote out (the Apple TV remote). I currently use the Naim app to control volume on the 552. I am familiar with the system automation and automatic input switching functions on the Naim hardware and via the Naim app, and I have the correct 3.5mm cable running between the ND555 and the 552, and have the functions enabled in the app. My thinking was I would use the Apple TV remote when I want to watch TV and perform the functions I described above, and then when I want to switch back to music, simply starting playback via Roon should in theory send a signal from the ND555 to the 552 via that 3.5mm cable to switch to the Tuner input. And it does. Sometimes. But only sometimes; most of the time the input doesn’t switch properly away from the AV input to the Tuner input once playback stars on the ND555 and I have to either manually press the Tuner button on the 552 or get into the Harmony app and switch it manually in the app. Since I’m trying to get rid of Harmony, having to use the Harmony app to switch isn’t ideal. I’m trying to figure out why the system automation function works sometimes but not every single time to switch to the music input on the 552 when I start playback on the ND555. I think I could probably also switch inputs on the 552 manually using the Naim app (though I haven’t tried, so I might be wrong there) and I guess that would be a solution but I’d much prefer that the input switched automatically on starting playback in order to eliminate having to open the app and switch it manually.
Anybody else had issues with the system automation input switching function only working some of the time? Anyone figure out how to make it work every time?
Thanks for your help.
