Not really. We have solar and batteries, and what we donât use we export. If we use less we export more, supporting the grid. The less we use, the less often gas fired power stations need to be fired up. Having our own energy is no excuse for wastefulness.
There is no waste. If you have solar and battery, and you do not export, then when your batteries are full, no current will be drawn from your solar cells. If the grid doesnât need the energy, then it wonât take the excess, it has to scale back if there is not enough demand. Again, in that scenario you are not wasting.
Turning gas power stations on and off is far more wasteful than keeping them running, not to mention costly. Thatâs before we even get to the farce that is DRAX.

Been using Naim since 1983 C/B then Olive and OC since 2016 always on as per Naim recomendation never had a bulb or LED failure.
ND555 always on and mute engaged whilst not listening to music I find this is the easiest setting for me and system is always at itâs best.

If I read your comment correctly (?) i.e. that you want no deterioration in SQ, but also want effective system automation (i.e. material power consumption reduction when in a â(semi) sleep modeâ), then these things are mutually exclusive. The following is listed for a NC 250 amp:
- Power consumption (off mode) : < 0.3W
- Power consumption (Standby mode) : < 0.5W
- Consumption in normal use : 26 W (also appears to be described as âidle consumptionâ).
Naim used to quote quiescent consumption figures i.e. switched on, but not playing (as such). If memory serves, this was around 18/20watts (perhaps 15), much of this consumed by the transformer, which converts some feed to heat â and itâs this, and keeping other circuits warm, which enables the best SQ. A âless than warmâ transformer, booted-up from a âsleep modeâ wonât enable this, as it can take quite a few hours (even days) to get to optimal operating temperature.
Did the Isotek unit fail after your standby problems, or was it just discovered to have failed upon investigating your issues? I am wondering if the Isotek conditioner might have been the culprit all along - your opening post essentially said that nothing worked and you presumed it was the standby facility. You did say the power lights were on, but later it was found that something had tripped on the Isotek unit. I am unfamiliar with Isotek devices, but it makes me wonder if the problem may have actually been caused by the Isotek tripping, otherwise conceivably some mains event that caused it to trip also affected the Naim gear. It does seem odd occurrence for the mains conditioner feeding all the Naim stuff to fail just because the latter turned off, and it would be an odd coincidence for the Isotek to independently trip at around the same time. This may be worth exploring with the dealer or with Isotek.

I respectfully disagree. My family are all strong environmentalists. My kids are studying different areas of environmental science in graduate school. That said all of us are very in tune with and have rejected performative environmentalism which has quite frankly had the unintended and horrific affect of turning a good portion of the public against the movement. Do your research please and stop lecturing like Greta. Class AB amps are not important in terms of environmental impact to any degree worth talking about.
The âInstant Onâ naming is yet another part of this silly kabuki dance. The regulator does his role and targets an industry that is small and compliant. He gets a âwinâ and can say he is making an important step to a better environment. Well he hasnât done any such thing. The companies then play their role in the kabuki dance and deliver a standbye function. It works so well that Naim and Rel in very nice terms designed to not piss any of their regulators off tell you flat out it is bad for the equipment and doesnât sound as good. And then there is the consumer. He is supposed to play his role in this kabuki dance and use this âgreat new featureâ that does little to nothing significant for the environment, wears out the internals faster, and sounds worse.
You know what..we all have brainsâŚleave the equipment full on, ignore this useless feature, and enjoy the benefits of better sound, longer equipment life, and less aggro.

@Innocent_Bystander The Isotek issue was discovered by the dealerâs tech when he visited on Tuesday. The system was fine on Saturday when i placed it in standby before going to bed. It was dead on Sunday when we awoke. We could turn on the power button on the front of each component but no sound. All the NC gear was plugged into the Isotek, so when the Isotek âtrippedâ, it must have effected the whole system. There has been a history of standby issues.

Whilst there may have been a history of standby issues, on this occasion at least it seems possible that the problem was nothing directly due to the Naim equipment, so the standby settings might not be to blame this time at all. As I suggested it may be worth taking up with your dealer and/or Isotek to try to understand what happened and see if anything can be done to prevent repeating.

@Innocent_Bystander Even when the Isotek has been fully working, there have been standby issues. Records stop playing, CDP stops, internet radio stops. About 5-6 times during the 14 months I have had NC gear. Auto standby is simply too flaky for me at this point.
Disagree all you like. If you choose not to save power, itâs your choice. Itâs nothing to do with my not doing research, as you condescendingly suggest. While the impact of putting a hifi into standby is tiny, these tiny things add up to a much larger thing.

Iâm not suggesting that the auto standby is error free, but if the CD player and/or turntable stop working, neither of which I understand are anything to do with Naim, it suggests there is some other problem that is affecting all. If it was me I would certainly be following that up to try to find a cause and hence solution, and blame Naim only when it is just the Naim products affected. As well as talking to the Dealer and Isotek, if all affected kit is plugged into the Isotek I suggest getting someone (presumably your helpful dealer) to remove the Isotek from the system and see if everything is then stable.

@Innocent_Bystander You are mistaken i had some exchanges with db110 on the forum in another thread I think he is the designer of the circuit. He confirmed that auto standby is not sensing a signal when a record is being played. Someone on this thread mentioned the CDP issue. There will be an eventual firmware upgrade to address the record issue. Until then he advised setting auto standby to never.

As Jay says, whatâs happening here is that the NSS333 streamer plays nothing for 20 minutes and goes into standby, which puts the amps into standby too. So if a record is playing, the sound goes off. Itâs an error in the design of the NAC332.

Iâve also noticed that the Nova stays on after finishing an album streamed from the Core. I understand why this happens but am still unimpressed by it.
It also may involve the NVCTT. My discussion with db110 never went that far. If the 332 shuts down that might explain the CDP issues.
From my perspective, until ALL issues with auto standby are addressed, then just set the system to instant on. if I am going to use auto standby, I would not want any degradation in SQ, compared to instant on as well
The tech also felt the more complex the NC system the more likely one would see glitches He felt that a two or three box NC system might be more immune That is only an untested hypothesis
