I tried to find the correct answers here, but I am a bit lost.
I am currently running an older onkyo avr as processor via pre-out into 552 for main speakers and into nap175 for center and surround. Avr and 175 switched off when not used.
I read here that I can use my pana 9000 for decoding true-hd /dts master and go analog into av2. How is this done? I could not see a 7.1 or 5.1 Analoge input on the back of the av2.
Seems to be something to do with 2x DIN input called „v“? Can I configure these as analoge inputs? What cables do I need? The din 5 - 4x rca as used in Tapedeck era?
And when going out from av2 to power amps? Is it 2x snaic4 into 175? But which cable into 552?
I know old tech. But tempting as I can gain some rack space.
@drago I suggest searching eg ManualsLib for the Naim AV2 manual: a lot of the info you seek is in there.
The two DIN analogue inputs in the AV2 are “versatile” inputs and can be combined (via configuration) to get 7.1. You’ll need an appropriate cable (made up?) from the Panasonic wired to support the two DIN inputs.
Sections 7 and 8 are the input/output chapters.
Your front left and right from the AV2 will go to your 552 - set that input on the 552 to AV pass through.
Dealing with the connection between AV2 and pre-amp first, you’ll need the “reverse” interconnect that came with the AV2 - this is like the lavender/grey I/c but with a yellow band. Connect this into the pre-amps AV input and set that for Unity Gain.
As for connecting the Panasonic’s 7.1 or 5.1 analogue output to the AV2, you’ll use the versatile input DINs on the AV2. The interconnects should be 4 x RCA Phono to DIN5 - “Tape” intrconnects can be used here, and I used a pair of Chord Chrysalis when I had my own AV2 so connected.
Connecting the power amps, you’ll use a pair of SNAIC4s to connect to a NAP-V175.
Wow - thanks. So I need special cables. Din 5 to din 4 - or will the normal one do (got interconnects for phone pre din5-4). But.. it’s din 5 to multiple din 4 … and front channel is coming from both. That’s complicated.
Sorry mixed It up. 2x DIN 5 is input. Output is din 4.
I tried unity gain with my current setup and switched it off as there is a slight speaker hum when on.
So I dial volume to a known position when used. Can I use the yellow band cable as well withunity gain switched on? And where do I get this cable? +
Do you know from memory what the range for speaker volume with av2 was? Plus/minis 12db? Need a bigger range when unity gain is off in order to avoid accidents (552 volume at 9 o clock and avr processor at plus 12 db).
The Yellow banded cable came with the AV2. I’m not sure whether still offered but you could try your dealer or distributor, otherwise try the usual online places. At a pinch you could have a standard I/c re-wired but make sure it’s clearly marked as such, otherwise it could use all sorts of issue down the line…
The hum could be coming from something up stream on the AV side - they usually all float the earth so it looks for a nice route to earth via the Naim kit. Try to find which item of kit is the cause and then try to cure by isolation.
Essentially the reverse cable allowed sources connected to the pre-amp to be routed back through the AV2 for PLII processing. Some music can take on a whole new dimension this way - IIRC Thom Yorke’s The Eraser was particularly interesting through PLII!
Don’t want to connect any analoge source to av 2. tv via optical and 5.1 from pana Blu-ray (ok - that is analoge). Need the correct cable for din 4 out of av2 into din5 input from 552. will look deep into net-search.
So I will tell, my dealer to exchange left an right channel at din 4 side (or din5) of one of my lavender 4/5 cables.
Now I only need to find out if the volume sEating range is broad enough. Is there a chance tha @NeilS would know what is behind -30 to +30 from av2 adjustments?
And… is the volume setting still active when you use the analog 5.1 input with pana Blu-ray encoding? This should be working (going through the manual).
Manual tells that input 3 should be used. Din 5 into tape monitor. Do I need that too? Don’t think so
Sorry and is the remote working in a different channel than 552? Can this be set in setup? If working on the same channel it would be a problem.
You have two options for connecting the AV2 to your preamp for the front speakers - the 4pin DIN labelled FRONT OUT & the 5pin DIN labelled ANALOGUE IN 3 (this is the one you need the reverse interconnect for).
I’m afraid I don’t know the output level steps in the setup, but I would investigate the reason behind the hum you are experiencing when using unity gain. Fixing that would be the best approach & mitigates any remote issues.
There is a link inside the AV2 that can be fitted or removed when troubleshooting hum issues:
@NeilS Thanks a lot - as ever really helpful. Have not jumped on the av2 yet. Need to know if I can install it first. Understand
The unity gain on my 552 is switching of the volume to be changed via remote? Does it? Or is the motor pot still working? Don’t think so. Unity gain would be best, than there’s no need for a wide volume setting range. With my old onkyo avr currently running there was a slight hum.
So it would be a problem without unity gain as the remote from av2 will also control my 552? Correct.
The manual states, that when connected to 5.1 analoge in, the signal will be routed directly to the volume control without decoding. Does this mean that the volume setting for each speaker (-30 to +30) is not working than and its routed to the master volume only. I fear it is.
