Instruction to upgrade browser

I’m a bit peeved that I’m being told I have to upgrade my browser just to stay on the Forum.

I don’t see why I should and why isn’t the Forum backward compatible like virtually every other one?

Which browser, computer and operating system version?

There might be some workarounds people know about.

Perhaps your browser version is indeed out of date?

Sorry,what’s the problem with upgrading?

Few forums are wholly backwards compatible and that’s entirely sensible as new security issues are discovered etc. If vulnerabilities can be found in obsolete browsers or version of a browser then most likely there will be no-one looking to fix them and that potentially exposes users of some sites to harm. Users of a site have more to lose from one user using an old browser than that user does from updating.

Browsers largely stand alone of operating systems so updating a browser ought not to require an OS upgrade unless that too is hopelessly out of date and, again, possibly unsupported.

Add in that an out of date browser and OS leaves your own data potentially vulnerable and the “peeve” should largely be in the opposite direction.

Got the same message today for my Netscape Navigator 1.2.

I agree, extremely annoying. Another case of Naim shooting themselves in the foot with updates.

Say what?

If someone is using an older tablet or smartphone for which the latest browser versions are not available it renders the device useless for the purpose, possobly meaning tge person has to buy a new device at significant cost just to be able to, in this case, stay on the forum. Personally I would find it particularly irritating if it were to happen to he app I use to browse and play my music, as that is a perfect use for an older but still working tablet.

I reported the same issue on another thread. Firefox has been updated regularly, so has Safari. It seems I will have to upgrade the OS, which, on a 10-year-old laptop, isn’t a simple thing.

Got ya.

This is down to the platform provider - Discourse. It’s nothing new, we’ve had it before a couple of years back where support for older OS/browser versions was dropped.

From Discourse;

Following the next stable release in July 2025, Discourse will start using some modern browser features which are unavailable on iOS 15, and some other old browsers.

Discourse’s minimum supported iOS version will be updated from 15.7 to 16.7. After that, visitors using older versions of iOS will be shown a basic-html version of community content, and won’t be able to login or interact with the site.

Devices limited to iOS 15 are the iPhone 6s, iPhone SE (gen 1), iPhone 7, and iPad Mini 4. These were all released more than 9 years ago, and are no longer updated by Apple (see [iosref. com]. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to interact with Discourse on those devices going forwards.

For more recent iOS devices, the OS should be updated to iOS 16.7 or higher.

This change will also affect older versions of other browsers. The minimum Firefox version with support for these features is v128 (July 2024), and the minimum Chrome(ium) version is v119 (Oct 2023).

From today, we’ll be rolling out a warning banner for affected users, with a link to this topic.

On the technical side, the features we’ll be requiring including relative color syntax, subgrid, and lookbehind regex, all of which will enable improved experiences for Discourse users.

More on this here;

I assume this also means that Safari 16 and above will be needed, so I too will need to upgrade at least one of my devices, an old mid 2012 Macbook Pro, using the Open Core legacy patcher to enable me to run Sonoma or Sequoia. I’ve used the OCLP on older MacBooks, even a 2009 iMac, and it has worked really well keeping these old devices running for as long as possible.

On the Discourse site, “user experience” seems to be a recurrent theme. I find the Naim forum quite simple to use and the interface rather attractive - if it’s a security issue, it’s a different matter.
As it is, I will either try to upgrade the MacOS to 10.15 (from 10.13.6), but it’s always risky on an old Macbook Pro (late 2013), or get a new Macbook (£1,500+).
Either way, it’s a pain in the neck.

That is an very sensible thing to ask if you want full compatibility and latest security patches So what is the issue ?

Isn’t there a Discourse App? I’d imagine that might rely on the phone’s browser so it may not help.

That is the issue…

HI SC

What does Apple say about the version of OS that your MacBook Pro can support ?

This might help ?

It looks as if 10.5.17 or 11 are latest versions supported by your MacBook Pro ?

All devices have a finite life. That’s defined by multiple things. Hardware might break and be unrepairable for example. It’s just as easily defined by not being able to use the latest and often most secure version of apps or sites. That’s life. Anything which lasts to the decade point nowadays is doing extraordinarily well. If you bought a laptop or tablet or phone in the expectation it would go on forever that is extraordinarily naive.

A significant part of the issue is that people of a certain age have a hardware mindset i.e. things only achieve obsolescence when the hardware is unrepairable or has been usurped. In reality software is the lead determinant of obsolescence nowadays. It’s a hard thing to get used to but it won’t be changing any time soon.
