Just thought I’d add to the general cheer here….
Well I have a fountain pen with matching pencil, film camera and lenses although I must admit sadly not used, a turntable and records used but possibly less so, my late wonderful wife’s original Kenwood food mixer which I do use.
When the car was invented did the bike become redundant? The plane the ship? The TV the radio? The video the still camera? Progress doesn’t necessarily mean redundancy!
Sadly, I agree.
I was 60 today. My wife gave me a beautiful fountain pen. I use one a lot on several days a week.
Happy to be hanging on to some old tech.

I fear you may be the rightest.
But in 75 years time, will she be able to get a replacement when it wears out? ![]()
Pen OR Husband ? ![]()
Democracy’s alive and well.
Some of the world’s worst leaders today have been elected democratically…
Some of you guys should read Stefan Zweig and Nietzsche. There is lots written about the end of democracy before the bloke in Germany came into power. And here we are having enjoyed so many years of unsurpassed freedom.
Don’t despair.
Truth
Nice current series on BBC Radio 4 called the Reith Lectures, a series of 4 entitled Moral Revolution by Dutchman Rutger Bregman I am finding particularly good. personally I think it would be fantastic if his vision replaced our current society, but I’d prefer it to be in my lifetime not after the end of this century!
The particle accelerator.
Love this.
Big Boffin gets zapped in the head with the most dazzling light then everything goes dark.
Imagine what a glimpse into particle metaphysics looks like.,
Something that will “soon” dissappear are desktop or laptop home computers while companies like IONQ are developing their cold laser channeling quantum gpus…….
The other day I used cash machines twice for the first time in ages. Must do it more often.
First reason was a local log supplier on a farm wanted payment in cash even though I’d paid by bank transfer a few weeks ago.
Later that evening decided we’d have fish and chips from a good chip shop (cooks to order) - having placed my order I was told it was cash only unless I could pay by bank transfer on my phone. Necessitated a quick walk to the local bank (nearest bank 10 yards away had closed for good a couple of years ago.
Food just about ready when I got back.
Wondered that too, speech recognition is pretty good these days but far from perfect.
We’d probably still need something for those unable to vocalise or who just didn’t like talking to a machine.
Suspect typewriters will go by the wayside.
There is no real telling what my replace the qwerty keyboard in all its forms but when you consider the end of the century is 75 years away almost anything could be true. Technological progress is accelerating on the whole and when you consider what happened to flight from the first powered flight in 1903 to 1978 75 years later it is quite a lot. The Boeing 747 had been in commercial use since 1970 and there were manned moon landings for example. So, in 75 years almost anything could happen by the time the end of 2099 is reached.
It depends an awful lot on background noise (snd suitability of microphone)
I have been surprised how well and virtually unfailing the voice recognition is in my new Skoda Elroq.
Why do you need to talk to a car?! Of course if autonomous you could say “turn left” and if would check mirrors, indicate, start reducing speed, etc, but fir that it wouldbe a limited range of instructions it would need to recognise.
