Is an active setup better or just different

I said your comment was silly, as you blindly (deafly) dismissed the suggestion by another member of listening, on the basis that you wont because in your view no ones doing active systems which just isn’t correct.
That’s all, stay cool

Active speakers and active system like in Naim, with Snaxo, active crossover…is not the same.
There are many active speakers today, with built in amp inside the speakers. But not in the very high end systems.

Actively driven?

Same principle different application

In a Statement system, affordable? If they could show better than passive Statements, they would do it in big shows. Quite sure.

Sense of humour gets lost in translation

To be reductionist, maybe it is just all about how good a sound you can get for your budget, whether going passive or active.
…and I do know that budgets can be flexible!

I have never said that, please read again. I have just said that active technology is not used today by 99% of world brands.
Of course, in a Naim system, the OP can compare active vs passive, but he is limited to Naim vintage speakers or Kudos. But yes, he can. And he will surely find that active sounds better in that limited context however.

Your quote. Factually incorrect, they do exist.

Absolutely!

@frenchrooster
You need room 12A..

I won’t return to the argument as I have made my point quite clearly. I think there is no more to be said unless you consider what I said about the upper level actively driven speakers from the likes of ATC and PMC maybe even read reviews of those and weigh up against your argument that active isn’t the best way of driving speakers, which appears to be based purely on the apparent fact that most of the top manufacturers don’t offer active speakers (apologies if my paraphrasing isn’t what you meant).

They don’t exist outside of Naim speakers or Kudos. Active speakers is absolutely different. You have to use the amp inside the speakers, not choose the amp you want.
Personally I heard third times active ATC . They sound good but it was not to my tastes at all.

I am reading absolute sound magazine, a reference in world audio press, since many many years. Never read ATC or PMC as being choosed for the best systems at the shows.

That’s not what you said originally when responding to Innocent Bystander, your now being a bit revisionist, but hey no big deal they do exist outside of the Linn/Naim hemisphere.

Never trusted magazines, pinch of salt. Holes on either side of my head are my best reference :+1:

Now that is certainly the practical question, at least for most people - and as far as activating good speakers is concerned I would agree that probably in the majority of cases the passive would bring most ‘bang for buck’, all else being equal (new vs new or secondhand against secondhand etc).

However there may be exceptions (may simply because I haven’t auditioned for myself) - and I am thinking here of ATC’s active speakers with the amp and crossover integral with the speaker, at a remarkable low package price for the reported quality, achieved through purpose-design of the amps. The SCM150ASL is the particular model I’m thinking of, but may apply equally to other models subject on the smaller ones to their (relatively) limited bass extension.

My dealer recently expressed difficulty in selling PMC’s apparently due to them rising prices to bring them in line with other higher priced speakers.
Seems a strange thing to do, unless their trying to increase their perceived rather than actual worth/value
