I have found an old tape deck Yamaha KX-300, along with some old pre-recorded tapes. Is there anyone else using a tape deck. This deck has been serviced and had new belts. I am really liking the sound is there anyone else sharing my nostalgia.
No. Horid medium.
I dug out my old NAD Cassette deck from the loft not long ago with the idea to give it a clean up and play some of my old cassettes just for nostalgia sake really.
Anyway all the belts had deteriorated which I managed to remove and clean all the pulleys etc. But the main play, rewind, ff functions etc aren’t working correctly. I think they have basically gunked up and all need a proper clean. That’s a much bigger job and not sure I can be bothered atm
Yes indeed. I still have a number of decks and use a pair of Nakamichis in the main system. Lots of wonderful recordings made years ago, and of course treasured mix tapes. If you want to do a collection of songs for somebody special there’s still nothing quite like a mix tape, especially the artwork on the labels and J cards.
I own a fully refurbished Technics RS-AZ6 3 head cassette deck and hundreds of tapes both old and new. In fact, I’ve never bought so many prerecorded cassette tapes over the past six years or so. There definitely seems to be a thriving community of cassette only labels and releases in 2025.
Absolutely not.
Sounds great with a 50p Randy Crawford tape. Mind, this album is terrific on vinyl, CD and streaming too…
Tape as in cassette - No! Horrid medium in my view, served a purpose for portability but otherwise I couldn’t dump it fast enough. I never wasted my hard-earned on prerecorded cassettes, and never understood people who did. Sorry! Now reel-to reel is another matter, and though I no longer use or have, long since supplanted by digital recording, I certainly have good memories and a soft spot for it.
You old romantic!
I had an almost identical ‘Summer Fun’ mix tape!
Indeed! When the first Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack came out on vinyl I recorded it on the Walkman Pro to replicate the cassette in the movie. I then left the replica cassette on the dining table for Loki-daughter to find at her breakfast place: she thought I’d somehow got my hands on the real thing! And then wowed again when she got to play it through her headphones from the deck itself! Truly a moment to treasure.
I used cassettes at Uni to record my vinyl, as a way of being able to listen frequently with fewer breaks , without wearing out the records or the stylus. Sony deck replaced with Technics, then Denon DRM20, before the Walkman Pro when I got my first job. I loved Metal tapes or the better Chromes, but my favourite blank cassette was a TEAC ‘reel to reel’ cassette tape which was a gift from Robert Ritchie himself for reviewing his emporium in the Student newspaper.
A Franken-tape?
Without the mix tape carefully crafted for some girl, some of us might not be here.
I have a vintage Nakamichi DR1. It has been refurbished and still sounds good. I have over 700 cassettes recorded on older Nakamichi decks. While not up to CD or Turntable standards, I enjoy tapes from my youth, many that are no longer available. Never bought pre-recorded tapes but Maxell and TDK work well.
I gave my Walkman Pro to a friend’s daughter, and she is using it.
Where is your DCS tape deck @Dunc ?
Teasing….but curious if you still use it.
