Hi. Well my Unitiserve has died for the 6th and final time
Regarding a replacement, is the Uniti Core a worthwhile reliable replacement
I have no first hand experience myself, but having helped a long time UnitiServe user for years I also helped him move to something more reliable.
After years of grief with the US there was no way he was going Naim
Because he’s disabled a CD slot ripper + server that does it all is an enormous help. His choice was Innuos Zen Ripper/Server.
I had changed all his old “Naim WAV” files to FLAC a long while ago, so just copied those over to the Innuos.
He’s now like a dog with two tails.
Myself, since the getgo, I’ve ripped with DVD/Laptop using dBpoweramp into Synology NAS and would never consider changing.
I have found it completely reliable. Software is a little limited but adequate. Good sound. Simple to use.
Built like a rock. Looks great. Sound quality outstanding thru a dac using spdf. Absolutely quiet. Software is a bit limited yes but i have no trouble managing a music library of almost 7tb on it.
It’s an expensive option I guess, but I bought mine secondhand. Utterly reliable and easy to edit metadata on rips if needed. The software isn’t that comprehensive but it does the job for me. Sound quality is great and it integrates well into the Naim app. I really can’t fault it and as mentioned above, it is very well built.
Yes, it’s pricey, but not so much regarding the Innuos Zen Mini…
It doesn’t “need” additional LPSU, you can install yourself any hard drive (HDD or SSD).
If any drive issue comes with Innuos, you must send the unit back to the factory in Portugal…
And it’s built like a tank: 7.0kg vs 4.5kg
Everyone tends to recommend what they have themselves and I have a Core so beware! I bought my Core because of its looks (I don’t buy ugly hifi to sit in our living room), SQ (my dealer was surprised how good it sounded when he demoed it for me - he was recommending the Zen mini), ease of use (some of the stuff some folk do to rip and play a CD goes miles over my head), the ability to swap out the internal HDD/SSD myself, brand loyalty and of course Naim’s customer service. I love my Core.
I’ve got a Synology NAS and db poweramp. I’ll try that route before splashing the cash. Thank you
What do you play it through? A Naim streamer? I have a Unitiqute in my second system but no streamer apart from a WiiM mini in my main system
We’ve got both a NAS (DS220) and a Core.
We only use the Core as a ripper, with the music store on the NAS. Asset uPnP on Synology is a fantastic server.
The Core is just a convenience for SWMBO to rip CDs easily. The vast majority of our CD collection was ripped using dbPoweramp on a laptop.
The Core is a very high quality build, but let down by very basic software (both client and server). Metadata edits are not transportable as naim have chosen to not store these in the actual music files.
Over wired ethernet the Core and the Synology NAS sound the same into our setup.
As a Unitiserve user you will be familiar with the rather limited features of Naim ripper/servers compared to others. If you get a Core, be prepared for something even more limited, with quite a few of the Unitiserve’s potentially useful features gone.
If you can live with that, maybe it’s an option. Personally I wouldn’t touch it. I would convert any WAVs to FLAC on the US before you part with it and use the Synology you already have. The bundled Synology server is a bit basic, but it works fine. If you want something more full featured, run Asset or Minimserver on it instead.
