Just inherited these Ella cds from my German step father who passed away in November. He was a huge jazz fan and I have his lps on their way from Germany as I write this.
That’s a nice memory of him to receive.
@bruss thank you and yes it is….looking forward to rummaging through the lps.
His preference was mainly swing and Charlie Parker was one of his faves!
I suppose to many contributors this would best be described as vulgar and overly sentimental.
Hal is direct.No question.
Charlie’s high notes bounce off the moon.
Ray Bryant’s bluesy modernism never sounded better.
The other two could do the session in their sleep.
On Qobuz with a decent RVG job.
Would have loved to sit with a few gins in clubs where this type of music was played.
Again,I think.
I have decided Harold Ashby to be my man of the day.
Like Hal,above,he came out of R&B and joined Duke when Jimmy Hamilton retired.
His approach is more refined. Sounds a lot like early Ben but with an element of smokey Charlie Rouse in the ballads .
Both on Qobuz and sound fine although Woodyard is a little overpowering at time.
Mainstreamers will enjoy them
Love it, rainy Sunday morning, a good coffee and good music with Hank Mobley and Abdullah Ibrahim

Pheww; without a single doubt in my top 5 of this year. Discovered thise Gene Ammons album by coincedence and a little help of the Roon algorithms; It is brilliant if you like this style of jazz. Well recorded and with a superb ensemble

Playing here now.
As you have found Jug have a go at this one.
Dodo’s life was full of sadness but he is an almost forgotten master of Bop piano. Wiki will lead you through his life.
On Qobuz
One of the first albums that tuned me into jazz. A big favourite.
