‘jazzin’ the classics’
Right and nice piano
Jazz music makes me anxious, because I don’t know where it is going or when it is going to stop.
Most jazz has a structure, usually theme/solos/theme but, as Thelonious Monk famously said, ‘ You’ve got to dig it to dig it, you dig?’, which I take to mean you should approach the music with an open mind.
Todays favourite jazz album
As described on Bandcamp, Live In Europe Vol.1 captures a series of the artist and his quartet’s performances throughout Europe in 1975. These gigs reflect Howard’s peculiar musical identity on the Free Jazz scene of that era. An uncanny and heavy atmosphere unifies the different compositions which are constructed with improvisations on disturbing repetitions.
You’ve got to dig it to dig it, you dig?
@Richard, I quite like that Jeff Parker track - thanks for the heads up - there are some great releases on ‘International Anthem’.
Always good to hear another version of Olé.
After blown away by the Kyle Shepherd Trio playing Teardrop(Massive Attack) on the Gilles Peterson show on R6, I downloaded his excellent “A Dance More Sweetly Played” , which includes this track.
Thanks for this. I wasn’t previously aware of this pianist but am really enjoying the recommendation.
Glad you like it. I had never been aware of this musician before. He is big in South Africa apparently.
I was struck by the subtle Abdullah Ibrahim influences on the first track.
Latest Discogs rummage.
Danny was a fine player in the Eddie Lockjaw tradition. Very well recorded.
Tommy Newsom worked for years on the Johnny Carson show but artistically as a jazz musician might liked to have achieved more. Who knows?
Ken Peplowski often used to tour the U.K. but has recently been ill. I enjoy hearing him pick up the clarinet.
Bill Charlap in a fine record with Phil Woods and Frank Wess in support.
Not your usual choices but it’s what I enjoy in the early hours with the medically approved ONE glass of
More likely on Spotify than Qobuz. I only use S with adverts on the QB to check.
Good selection. All on Tidal apart from the Peplowski/Jones where I can only find the title track.
