Last Saturday I added two more CD’s to my sprawling collection.
I finally caved in a bought Nubya Garcia’s new album, Odyssey, more out of curiosity than anything else, as it seems to be cropping up in all the best of 24 lists, and I enjoyed her last one.
I think her last disk was more vital and heartfelt. This one has some nice moments, and I need to have a few more listens. But it seems a little overproduced. Maybe a shift to a major record label and a bigger budget, has not been quite so positive.
The second disc I bought was Immanuel Wilkins’s Blues Blood. this has much the same urge to do something on the edges of Jazz, that I found with Odyssey above. Adding vocalists seems to be the thing this year. This record has class.
A quartet led by Jeremy Pelt on trumpet. Lovely version of ‘We Kiss In A Shadow’, most memorably covered by Sonny Rollins on the great East Broadway Run Down album.
To night we will put on the three button mohair from the little tailor by the Angel. The new Billy Eckstine roll collar shirt from Cecil Gee in Shaftesbury Avenue and off we go to the Marque club. Ronnie’s at this time was an uncomfortable church hall.
A great favourite at the time with Art Eleffson on tenor. Another wonderful player who made a great career in USA. On Spotify. I got a Black Friday deal. Nice to be reacquainted with their comprehensive catalogue.
I can remember all that soo clearly. Ask me what I had for dinner.
A wonderful Norman Granz’s capture.
Bit of the usual showing off on the first track but, hey, it’s JATP.
Solo honours to Hawk closely followed by Diz in Look Tonight.
Open recording really lets the trumpet ring.
£3.00 for the cd. Crazy.
