Some calm and reflective Ellingtonia.

Anything Ellingtonian piques my interest but sadly it doesnt seem to have arrived at Qobuz. Unless others with more nimble fingers…….

John Fordham writes an interesting article on line in UK jazz news.

I saw a concert at RFH. Still remember Carney’s baritone sound thumping me in the chest at the start of A train. Fan boy ……near the stage.

Thank you.I shall live with that for a couple of days. It sounds a kind tribute.

Is it Jazz is a question I ask myself more and more as I pick up CD’s form the Jazz bin?

Lullaby for the Lost by Donny McCaslin, on Edition, make me wonder about the limits of Jazz. Lots of electronics and deep bass on this on. I think this guy has been listening to the Bad Plus. Turn up the bass for this one (or bass heavy headphones). Enjoyable.

JD Allen Love Letters, certainly is Jazz, Wonderful tone and well played standards.

The guy in my record shop gave me a SH well worn CD that had come in after I said I like South African Jazz. It has the price tag in Rand.

Best of Township Jazz is a curious listen. Many of the tracks veer towards the zone were jazz meets pop, and we might turn our noses up. The track from Hugh Masekela has a lot of syth for example. I enjoy it more each listen, in its popular simplicity. One to rip to listen to in the car.

Charles Lloyd, Finger in Blue is charming, but maybe a single LP would have been enough.

Memories Dreams Reflections, by Nicole Glover is very different from her last one. Love her sound.

I’ve been listening a lot to Roy Hargrove of late and this excellent Radio session from 2010 features a young Jon Batiste who was one of the many musicians Roy mentored during his lifetime.

This guy can really play, Remi Harris described as a Gypsy Jazz guitarist but is at home playing Jazz guitar and Blues his tributes to Peter Green are very good.

Love Roy Hargrove - cannot find this one ???

Apart from this Youtube recording I’ve only ever heard Soulful played by Jon Batiste on his Live at the Village Vanguard record where he actually references this exact Radio recording on youtube which is how I found it.

One of my favourite Roy Hargrove tracks Ballad For the Children from his Grammy winning Habana record. Roy played ballads so beautifully to my ears he is the only trumpet player who could match Chet Baker in this department.

I’m very taken with this instrumental album. L’Antidote brings together Iranian percussionist Bijan Chemirani , Albanian-Italian cellist Redi Hasa and Lebanese pianist Rami Khalife.
