Just added a REL T7/x Sub

Jimbo72,
When I read RELs set up guides, that I can find on their website, they talk about 15 clicks from minimum position and then +/-3 being the final position for the majority of systems in terms of gain and crossover rather than hz for example.
Am I missing some alternative guidance?
I only ask as I’ve got two REL Classic 98s on order.
Thanks

Hi Tapp,

I read that you want the Crossover to be ~10Hz above the minimum response of your speakers. On the T7/x the dial has 40 clicks between min (30Hz) and max (120Hz). So that makes each click of the dial about 2.25Hz. My speakers min response is 58Hz, so I was looking at getting around 68Hz. 18 clicks x 2.25Hz = 40.5. So the min (30Hz) + 40.5 = 70.5Hz. I could have done 17 clicks to be closer to 68, but being a fan of Spinal Tap, I felt obliged to add 1 more click. (Note: I’m note sure if the 10Hz above speakers minimum response was in the REL manual, but I know I heard it/read it/saw it somewhere, so I went with that and it’s worked out nicely for me).

Hi Jimbo72
Thanks really appreciate your response and for sharing what has worked for you.
Interesting that you fell between RELs guidance though with regard to crossover. Only query is whether frequency per click is linear but is academic as fine tuning by ear is what matters.
Did you take a note of clicks on gain?
With my speakers frequency response being 40hz I suspect I’ll be a few clicks less from minimum!
Thanks again.

Once you get your Rels dialed in please post how you find them with your Proacs.

Jimbo72’s description of how to dial them in seems sensible, I read loads on the internet and tied myself up on knots!

Yeah REL try to keep it even easier - go with what sounds best to you and forget Hz completely just count clicks (if you must) but start with 15 then give or take 3 either way works for most!

Hey M
The subs are not for the ProAcs - to me they are just right with Naim and nothing else.
The RELs are for a second system to supplement Wharfedale Lintons - I have high hopes but we’ll see.

Gotcha. Thanks for the info.

Congrats on the purchase @Jimbo72, wonderful bit of kit!

A while back, I added a T5/x in my setup, having the PMC 25.23 and not getting enough presence in the lower register. It worked wonders for the entire spectrum not just the bass. My first ever subwoofer that I don’t hear nor feel, integrating perfectly with the speakers. If anything, I’ll just add another if I ever move the system to a bigger room.

Agree Dan, my experience too. I ended up with a stereo pair!

Thanks Tapp,

Nothing scientific on Gain. I figured I’d start high (so the dial at about 2 o’clock) and lower it incrementally until I was happy, so finished somewhere between 11 and 12 o’clock.
