Stage 8 is going to be memorable…

Firstly the non-starter, Luca van Boven who the day before crashed heavily at 28km to go during Stage 7, but he incredibly finished the stage, and to find he had broken ribs and a collapsed lung. He went to hospital.

At the beginning of Stage 8 an unfortunate three rider crash held up proceedings, one by one all three riders eventually abandoned the tour due to injuries.
With 31km to remaining, ‘La Roja’ crashes and abandons, it was horrible to watch, Tadej looked quite shaken and to be hurting really bad.

“He is stable and, following a thorough medical assessment at hospital, Tadej has been diagnosed with a concussion, displaced left clavicle fracture, a stable C7 cervical fracture, and multiple abrasions,” said UAE Team Emirates-XRG’s medical director, Adrian Rotunno.

Then another horrendous multi bike and rider pile up on the finishing sprint.
We will find out tomorrow if anyone else is unable to continue.

A fantastic win for Bryan Coquard, his first Grand Tour stage win, well deserved.

Enric Mas becomes the GC leader and will wear La Roja tomorrow.
This is his 8th Vuelta, he finished on the podium in 2nd place in 2018, 2021, and 2022.
He came 3rd in 2024.
He won a stage in 2018, however has finished in 2nd place six times.

Mas has a lot of class competition to contend with, including three previous Grand Tour winners.
Sepp Kuss won La Vuelta in 2023
Primož Roglič has won La Vuelta four times, and one Giro.
Richard Carapaz won the Giro in 2019

Enric Mas, the man that often finishes second, is probably thinking this is his big chance to become a Grand Tour winner.

Long way to go yet though…

I was really impressed that Mas chose not to wear the Red Jersey on the podium yesterday and with his comments when asked why he didn’t put it on. A true sports person and a credit to cycling.

Whilst it will now be a very different race over the next 2 weeks. Yesterday showed that we can expect it to be a very enjoyable race: well, for the spectators and TV audience. I expect most of the peloton might use different adjectives to describe it.

Stage 10 : Alcaraz - Elche de la Sierra (184.7km)

Nothing too steep or long today and no flat roads; the going up and down for the ‘puncheurs’ so Wout van Aert may be in the break on the collect for more points on his Green Jersey lead, Matthew Brennan may fancy his stage winning chances today, and Mads Pedersen too if he can cope with the initial uncategorised climb. We could see a sizeable scramble to get into the breakaway…

Also need to watch for those UAE guys, so much firepower without a leader and now danger-men all of them.
Movistar a team not used to riding at the peloton sharp-end to protect Le Roja, probably defensive tactics today, plenty of action to come their way later in the tour.
