Levelling Ovators

Has anyone found a way to check that Ovators are level? I usually use the Naim Aro bubble spirit level on other speakers, but without a flat surface on my 600s, I am stumped!

Making the assumption that your walls are vertical, you could use a tape measure from any vertical edge at the top and at the bottom of the speaker to the side wall and the wall behind the speaker.

Perhaps a bit of DIY to build a little triangular wedge that creates a level surface when placed on top…

Good idea. Only the back is straight, though. You’ve given me an idea, however; builder’s spirit level used vertically rather than horizontally? Either that or I’ll ask to borrow Heimdall’s sword, a truer edge than which is none.

…and then watch it slide off😂 To be fair, it has been suggested that a small squared off shim, or a couple of curtain rings around the spikes might work, always supposing the Great Listening Hall’s floor is level.

I don’t own S600s but have just looked at pictures, online. There is a clean vertical edge to the front baffle, from the top and bottom of which the distance to a sidewall could be measured. (Assumption here is that front baffle does not taper.)

Smart move, thank you, obvious, now I look at it.

I tend not to trust little bubble levels as even the tiniest imperfection in the surface they are on - even a speck of dust - can cause quite large deviations. I use a combination of long and short Stabila builders levels and find that with SL2s measuring the side panels works well.

No flat surface on the tops of my B&Ws, so I’ve always used a 50cm level vertically on the sides when fussing over levelling them.

Getting right down to get a small spanner onto the nuts on the spiked feet to adjust them is a rare old pain, so I’m always glad when the level tells me they’re still OK.

I use a good quality 20cm spirit level.

Using it along the straight edge at the back of the angled top panel to set left to right, and placed on the flat back panel to give front to back.

You can also use a laser level which might be easier. Regardless, if you want perfectly level then unless you’ve checked its accuracy do try reversing it - it should show the same. Many levels are not accurate even when new, and while others can go out of adjustment. .(If not the same each way then if not adjustable simply average the two orientations).

However in reality a small deviation from perfect perpendicularity is unlikely to matter, and in my view simply getting it so it looks right is adequate (unless you want to sit balls on top - not relevant to Ovators anyway IIR),

Good call I-B. Bi-Frost vs laser might be interesting!

‘T’is Stabila we have! Thanks for tip-off re bubble levels.

Finally sussed it: triple level Stabila pressed to front or back panel, above the plinth lip works for the vertical, and gently rested across the top for the horizontal.

Thank you so much for all the good advice; such is the spirit of this space; libations all round :clinking_beer_mugs:
