Life of a cartridge

Bit pathetic IMO and can’t see the logic, I’ve had things removed trying to help a guy.

I do this account of the servant: I have 120 vinyls. Let’s say that if I remove the last 20 purchased I have 100, let’s admit that I have listened to each at least 5 times, and I would say that they are too many. My cartridge has 500 hours. So given the exaggerated figure, I’m not even halfway through my career. :birthday::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye::grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Yep it can get annoying
I posted a link on a speaker question to a kit form he was asking about it got took down, I could have saved the person in question a fair bit off money but hey ho rules is rules, then posted about some other speakers with a link that got took away as well
Freedom off speech according to naim
Suppose Richard is just trying to keep the peace between us and naim

I can agree on the extremes like tons of eBay links from would be wheeler dealers, or similar, but a member asking “oh no, I’ve lost an ABC anyone know where I can’t get one? “

Otherwise, this place is just got x get y got a get b, get the DR version, got a golf get a boxster, oh and show me your watch.

Agree but I’m sure plenty think if you don’t like it go elsewhere because this is a niam forum
I just think it needs to rethink a bit to be honest, but that is my thought and those I shall keep to my self in fear off upsetting some

Depends on correct set up , Correct Azimuth/VTF/ Bias do you use a RCM
general guide
100-200hrs spherical
200-400hrs elliptical
400-600hrs Hyper Elliptical
800-1000hrs Snibata
1500-2500hrs Micro Ridge / Replicant extended line contact

I have an ATVM95 Shibata on my Rega P8.

AudioTechnica suggest 800 hours on the stylus, which is hilarious (my dealer thinks 1500 should be easy). All my vinyl has been cleaned multiple times and I am recleaning it all as I work my way through all my vinyl A-Z on my ProJect VCe.

I have a stylus timer and, as I listen now, it’s done 808 hours since I bought my P8 on the 28th February 2020.

Still sounds as good as it ever did - but my only real way to tell would be to swap it out for another stylus (if I had a spare). Such a hard thing to determine as we are mostly naturally inclined to think “does that sound normal?”, “is that more sibilance near the end of the side than normal?” etc.

This, and the additional problem that once you hear it, it is already too late and damage to vinyl may already have occurred.

Absolutely. Such a difficult thing to pin down.

Audio techica
“Every cartridge diamond stylus becomes worn after a period of play. Around 500 hours for a conical stylus, 300 hours for an Elliptical stylus, 1000 hours for a Microlinear stylus, and 800 hours for a Shibata stylus. Our VM95 Series dual moving magnet cartridges can be used almost forever by replacing the interchangeable stylus. It is no longer necessary to purchase a complete cartridge when your diamond is worn out, you can simply buy the matching replacement stylus, but also enjoy the experience of upgrading your cartridge with a different stylus. The six models of VM95 Series cartridges all use the same electromagnetic engine-body, therefore each of the six replacement styli are perfectly compatible.”

It’s a great cartridge system and the cartridges are great. I have used both SH and ML.

My VM95 SH is now just under 12 months since fitted to my P8, and hit 820 hours so far. Still sounds great, is used on well cleaned vinyl and I check the set up regularly :+1:

But how consistently are the styli mounted to the cantilever and the cantilever to the assembly. If you align the first, say microline, can you just plug another in and get the same result. How about swapping in a Shibata?

I’ve been reliably informed by Rega and now Linn that their cartridges last until you break them. Well, that’s my experience so far…

May I ask what protractor is used for your pictured VM95sh ?

This thread was getting me worried as I have RP10/Aphelion. I keep a count of LPs played which is at about 1200.

After following the Rega Tonearm thread and making the adjustment it is sounding better than ever. Vinyl is no longer my favourite source even though with a mere Aria it is a close call.

I use the one supplied by Rega to check the alignment but it was set up by my dealer when I got the P8 and there’s been no movement of it at all since new :+1:

Interesting
I have a vm95sh installed on my P7, placed a few mm further out in headshell, screws are not even in middle.

I’ve no idea I was just interested in what Audio technica said and the big difference between the stylus types

500 hours for a conical stylus, 300 hours for an Elliptical stylus, 1000 hours for a Microlinear stylus, and 800 hours for a Shibata stylus
