Linn Audio LIDAR

Linn LIDAR, a new initiative from Linn audio, and this is a SO enhancement functionally that I have been waiting for.

Interesting. Does it work if you don’t own any Linn products?

No, this will work only for a Linn DSM with Sound Optimisation

Interesting… I did spend quite a bit of time accurately measuring my room when I first setup SO on my KDSM, but as I have one of the supported phone models, I’ll give LinnDAR a go.

Report back if you try it out, Sean.

Nice if it potentially offers enhancements.

Does it ask you to specify if flooring is carpet/wood/tile/solid or suspended floor etc as I’d imagine they’d give different characteristics?

I just tested it on my iPhone 17 Pro Max; you may need several attempts to develop a sense of it.

You scan the phone’s camera across the walls, ceiling, and floor so it can build an editable model. You still need to assign materials for the floor, walls, and ceiling and check the features it added; pay attention to walls hidden by furniture, large openings, and fixed elements. I’ve found that LinnDAR added some pieces of rather large, heavy furnitures that I conveniently skipped before. Room measurements are between -+ 2cm error margin if you use Bosch laser tape.

The room model is then used as the input for the Linn SO. At the moment, I am listening to a new SO based on the room model created by LinnDAR, and I think I am happy with the resulting SQ, a slight bright harshness that I noted before seems to be fixed.

Btw, AV Option SIGNAL XLR-XLR 1.5-meter balanced stereo pair will arrive within the next few days. Happy days ahead.

Yes, it does. You will have to input all the wall, ceiling, floor materials, and types.

So the iPhone 18 Pro costs £500 more than the 17e I was considering. I already use SO with my ADSM/3. Will this make £500 improvement to SQ? It’s not really something I can home dem.

Not sure this is real. There is no k in the name.

Looks interesting, having recently got a new Majik DSM but not having looked into the SO setup yet.

What have you go now, LIDAR has been on some iPhones for ages. Otherwise as it’s not something you will be doing on a regular basis, have you got a friend with a suitable phone who could do the scan and import for you?

iPhone SE. You just made me remember my daughter has the pro max so I can rope her into it. I was impressed when I did SO earlier this year so this must be worth a go, as long as the ADSM/3 gets the update. Assume it’s server based so should be good.

Per Linn docs:

Hardware support

You need a LiDAR-capable iOS device. The app checks for this at launch and won’t let you scan without it. LiDAR is available on:

  • iPhone: 12 Pro / 12 Pro Max and every Pro / Pro Max model since
  • iPad Pro: 11-inch and 12.9-inch, 2020 (4th generation) and later

So, if you’ve already established and measured speaker and listening positions, does that get included once you’ve done the LinnDar scan or do you have to start that from scratch?

The LinnDAR iOS app only creates the room model, you will need to enter the speaker and listening positions, and that could be quick if you alreay have other SO configurations.

Btw, there is an official Linn LinnDAR youtube tutorial if you search for it.

“Linda”, as it’s known internally, was demo’d at the Linn dealer’s meeting at HQ last week.

Yet to try it on my system, although I am using SO to good effect.
