Linn Selekt Journey

Yep, I had a home demo yesterday. I’m now considering if I should really spend that much dosh on myself .

Does the home demo include the 606s spending a few days with you to obtain a better understanding of whether or not they work for you? Personally I like mine, do not envisage changing them.

I also heard 606s on the end of a 222/300 NC250 set up, my previous setup before changing to Linn DSM active driving the 606s. That also sounded good, in fact I determined I was keeping the 606s irrespective of which system was driving them.

Hope you continue to enjoy your music whatever you decide.

Unfortunately I only had them for a couple of hours at home. I did have a shop demo against other speakers beforehand though.

Perhaps that is why I’m still deliberating. Yes, they sounded much more natural / realistic than what I have currently. But is it worth the significant outlay (even at ex-demo pricing) to me? I know only I can decide that . But having them for a week to really get to hear what they can do would help. I’ll see if I can get them sale or return.

P.S. They were fitted with Gaia IIIs (I know, should have been IIs) rather than spikes as I have LVT flooring and spikes cause damage and make adjustments a problem. I actually thought they sounded better in my room which is quite a bit smaller than the shop demo suite. Maybe it was the Gaia mounts?

They are very good loudspeakers. I found that they worked well with my previous Naim kit and now my present Linn kit.

They work well in the passive mode, but excel in the active mode, which they are designed for.

For me, they are worth the money and I must admit, that I did not hesitate after hearing them at the dealers.

I guess my problem really that new toys just for me end up costing twice the sticker price when the dust has finally settled :smiling_face_with_tear:.

Just brilliant . So easy with the supplied kit. Lovely Plixir power supply and single mode optical cable. Incredible precision and musicality with the music.

Nice set up. Easier with the Klimax as it has a SFO Port.

Very nice setup, I wonder about the combination of Linn and Naim amps … how are you liking this?

Nice one. Glad you got sorted easily.

BTW, if you’re finding the blue glow from the LEDs on the Exakt link ports annoying, you can turn them off in the Advanced tab settings in your Linn account.

Yes. No issues. With the Linn Klimax the 250 dr sounds more effortless and clear. There is a track called “ Queen Mary “ by Francine Thirteen and the bass is absolutely thunderous! Plus low volume listening is very spacious and easy.

I haven’t been able to do any serious listening this week, as we’ve had family over from Poland.

I’ll get back to it next week.

Done. You’re very clever knowing your way around the Linn site. I’ll see if I miss the blue glow tonight.

How does this thing work, or what does it do. Can it be used with a Naim streamer?

The Linn Klimax has an optical SFP input which can take an optical input. It is different from a toslink. I am not sure how you would make it work with an ND555. However with all the network engineers on the forum they may be able to advise on a workaround.
In the Klimax it really tidies up the signal and everything sounds incredibly focused and lifelike.

The essence of it is that it gets rid of any noise from your Ethernet signal by completely decoupling it from the copper cable and converting it to an optical signal. In my case it gets rid of any interference in the 30m of Ethernet cable from my router, which is in a different room. The result is a more finely etched signal with no loss of musicality for $2300 in my case. Real music sorted it out for me.

Yes it can.

It’s supposed to reduce electrical noise over the Ethernet cables for the streamer.

You connect it between the final switch and the streamer, thus creating a break.

This is from the ADOT website to provide some background information.
“Behind the 0’s and 1’s, hi-fi electrical signals are still analogue and susceptible to noise and interference. This additional noise can compromise the integrity of pulse edges, leading to timing errors and jitter… By breaking the conducted signal and isolating the hi-fi system using fibre optics, effectively removes interference and noise. This allows the data to be communicated to digital components without introducing any conducted interference. The result is pristine audio quality and improved performance.”

I picked up a complete TP-Link kit on eBay for £25, so worth a punt at that price.

On the top level streamer from Linn, the Next Generation Klimax DSM, this comes with a fibre optic SFP port and they recommend using a fibre optic Ethernet cable. However, the DSM I have, the Linn Selekt DSM; Edition Hub does not, so this kit is a way of achieving this.

Hope this helps

Ah, yes, I remember now John at RM in Auckland explaining this decoupling aspect to me. If I recall this correctly, you can do a double decoupling Ethernet to Optical and then back to Ethernet or coaxial/toslink to the ND555, but I don’t know if that means losing some of the app functionality. Any, it’s sounds like a great addition to the Linn streamer, so I’m pleased that you got it sorted.

Yes , once it is set up the functionality of the setup is unchanged. Just use the app as normal.

Now that you have had the Selekt for a reasonable time, I was wondering what your impressions were, particularly in regard to running your Titan’s active?

I have recently considered changing my NC system for a Selekt configured as yours is to achieve exactly that, but have been held back not only by the cost but also by doubts as to whether I would see a significant difference in the sound. Obviously the right solution is to audition as you did and I’m equally certain that the move to a one box solution would be much appreciated.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi J

I’m very impressed. We think it’s great, much better than my previous Linn Klimax DS/ and active Naim set up.

Initially had reservations about it being powerful enough, but at the demo it proved that there was no issues.

It is also nice going to a one box system.

Thx, will endeavour to arrange an audition with my favourite dealer .

Oh, and at the risk of heresy, did you consider the Nova PE…. One box, Class D, much, much lower cost but of course zero flexibility/modularity and no Organik DAC……

Perhaps I’ll get my coat😇.
