Picture disks are for putting on the wall, not for playing !
Although I do have a Kajagoogoo 12" single that sounds half decent on a picture disk.
Just playing the 24/44.1 FLAC, as LP is still en-route from the UK (ridiculous additional customs processes seem to delay the movement of goods from this now 3rd country, who would of predicted that! )
Liking it, starting to mature adding some further complexity and layering to the soundscape, plus lyricial. The break between the ādifficult 3rd albumā and this the 4th, was beneficial.
I found it āniceā, but fairly unremarkable. Not quite as bland as California Soil but I donāt think it will be in my download basket. The first two albums are enough for me.
Heard the new Nilufa Yanya album āMy Method Actorā and in some ways it is a bit similar but much preferred it. Her voice may not be as good but I like the loose soulful vibe. Wow, did i just write that?
Anyone else heard it?
Bruce
Nope not heard of it so will seek it out.
Iāve always found that I need several listens before I start enjoying a LG album. Itās not immediately rewarding music. I remember that I hated Ā« Hell to the liars Ā» when I first heard it, and now absolutely worship it!
I had so far one full listen of The Greatest Love. Unsurprisingly, it didnāt fully grab me, but Iām sure it will grow on me as I keep listening to it.
Iāve listened to it twice now, but it seems rather too āpleasantā for my ears and the arrangements are too dense IMO, not allowing space for Hannahās voice. After an astonishing debut, I find each successive album to be less exciting than the one which preceded it.
Glad itās not just me then.
Like so many bands London Grammar made an exceptional debut record a second that was very good but not exceptional and from then on itās been downhill.
Sonically, itās impressive, and the vocals are excellent. But the songs are mediocre, and the lyrics are among the worst Iāve heard in a long time, for those who care about such things (I do).
Sounds much better after the firmware update! It may actually grow on me.
The firmware update is jaw-dropping. Thatās what prompted me to listen to the album again.
In what ways is it different?
I cant say ive noticed anything since updating my nd5xs2.
Really? More detail, more cohesion, more clarity. Iām finding it better in every way, and I usually avoid nonsense like ānight and day differenceā or indeed ājaw-dropping.ā But in my system (ND5XS2, SN2, Hi-Cap DR, Tidal Max), itās an amazing upgrade, especially with music that was well-recorded in the first place.
Massive difference on the Nova feeding analogue to the rest of the kit.
Considerably more detailed, a lot of harshness I found fatiguing has gone, expanded soundstage and depth. Instruments and voices just have so much more timbre/character, as though everything was a bit smeared before. Sounds contradictory but a lot smoother whilst more detailed. Percussion is so much more detailed and easier to follow. Quickly changing sounds I thought had maybe 3 notes now have double that but no longer smeared together (Prefab Sproutās āJordan the Comebackā first few tracks).
I listened to some decades old stuff last night I thought I knew backwards and frequently still play these days - several items just sounded as though someone had added delicate new layers Iād never heard before, and coupled with an almost holographic soundstage I was gobsmacked. Quite astonishing.
The majority of stuff sounded much better to me.
A few items didnāt sound as good as Iād hoped - they seemed a bit too polite by comparison and extra detail perhaps distracted from what Iād always regarded as a simple arrangement (Sadeās Diamond Life was the one that struck me most).
Hmm, i am going to take another listen later.
I am using qobuz rather than tidal. Maybe Tidal is better?
Let us know how you get on. Maybe Iāve been swayed by the power of suggestion (but I donāt think so).
Using Qobuz here.
Interestingly I also discovered last night that Qobuz settings were set to CD quality not hi-res in the Naim app, and my observations were before changing to hi-res. No idea if Iād inadvertently set that before or if an app update defaulted to CD.
I gave up after the second trackā¦ put on IF YOU WAIT and were back to good old LG
Just re-listened to this on the new firmware.
Unfortunately most of the songs still sound very repetitive
Theyāll never beat their first two offerings.
