Love the 272 please update - 1 click like post

Has anyone compared 272 with Nova into a 250dr?

Maybe … Nova is an indication on how a new 272 with new streaming board might sound ?

I’m sure someone has.

I was thinking the new ‘372’ would have case work like NDX2 with the same display … and then controls like “272” alongside … (volume/buttons). I don’t think the statement style volume arrangement is appropriate in the classic series. I think if it does arrive the price would be around the 4k mark… a serious investment.

Spot on, it would have to be based on the Classic/500 casing. I have an Atom and think it’s great, but it’s not in the same league Classic/500.

When is the High End show in Munich? May timeframe?

Ideal for the introduction of the NAC-N 272-2 if you ask me …

Have a 272 and would love to see the new features like Qobuz come alive on the machine.

Who will do post 272 on this topic & is this topic getting 272 likes?

As per the Naim release notice, the 272 is not included, at this time. I think you will only see Qobuz on the replacement 272. As for the price, I would expect to see north of £6000.

The legacy platform streamers, including the 272, will not get Qobuz according to Naim. It’s a shame as I’d much prefer it to Tidal.

Munich High End would be a good time to introduce the new product. I’ve said before that I think two streaming preamps would be a good idea - a 272.2 that’s simply a better version of what we have now, and a 372 without power supply but which can take both feeds from a 555PS. The latter would tackle the Linn KDSM head on, ideally for a bit less money.

Will the update to include Qobuz in various Naim products announces today also apply to the NAC N272?

No, see above. And welcome.

I can’t see Naim making a replacement better than or on par with the products that are true separates.

I.e a new 272 streaming section can’t be as good as a NDX2 and it can’t be better than a 282 pre amp in the pre amp section.
I know the consensus was that the original was blinding with the additional 555ps added but it would have an adverse effect on the other product ranges.

If this is the plan I would think a whole new improved Pre amp line up would be more appropriate to release prior to the replacement 272 and then it would be more fitting and not step on the toes of the others.

Obviously times are changing and people want low box count but if you want the best sound quality there is no getting away from more boxes.
It’s like combined washing machine tumble dryers, space saving and do the job of both but not as well as them separately. You want the space or you want the performance?

High end Naim Isn’t about low box count, hence separate power supplies for one.

You highlight the challenge very well. The 272 is really too good for the money. To comprehensively beat the 272/555 you are looking at a 500 series setup.

Which is exactly what Jason said about the 272 when he came to set up my SL2s. “It’s a bit too good…”

I’d venture to suggest an NDX2/XPSDR/252 is significantly better than the 272/555 with NDX2/555DR/252 as better still

As already mentioned it would be good to bring the 272 innards up to date, to overcome the issues that legacy streamers have with Tidal and to include newer streamers’ functionality. If SQ was slightly throttled back to maintain the hierarchy I could live with that.

My upgrade options from here are too extreme - to replace the 272 + 555 would involve going NDX2, plus a 252 + a SC. Three boxes to buy, and two more on the box count = another rack, and (new) an outlay of about £15k. I’m not doing that. I would happily chuck a few k at a replacement 272 though.

I’m not sure; I wouldn’t want a 252. It would be a 552 or nothing. It would have to be a massive improvement to justify two more boxes.

Yes quite, the 272/555/300 really is extraordinarily good. The £30,000 cost of an ND555 and 552 is a massive amount of cash and something I could not justify. As you say, a better 272 for a few £k could be a goer. But I don’t use or want Tidal or Qobuz so unless it was a decent sonic improvement I’m not sure I’d bother.

I think the 372 is doable … I think for it to be worthwhile to Naim it would be probably more expensive than NDX2 … but I believe it would be popular because the alternative is a very expensive preamp for starters …fingers crossed…

It would have to be a lot more expensive! How could you make two products in one for the same as the NDX2 and you want the same sound quality performance!
