Magico Speakers with Naim

Thanks Paul, looks like winter turned up last night…

Thanks Bart. I was a bit worried the M-Cast finish might be bit too industrial and dull but they look great in the flesh and and there is a metallic fleck that picks up the light to accentuate the angles and curves.

Hi Elfer,
Absolutely lovely. Thank you for sharing.

Best regards, BF

Indeed! Ski season is not far. We’ve got our first flakes (10cm) last night and we’re expecting up to 40 cm during the weekend.

First snow came and went at the end of August and we had moderate snowfall at the house last night (1350m) but wet and didn’t last. Higher up we had around 30cm with heavy wind. Friends we’re out searching for sneaky lines on the lee slopes this morning and found some fantastic powder pockets. I’m travelling for work tomorrow (1st time since March) so had to prep’ and couldn’t get out there with them  Roll on winter proper !

Has anyone tried the A1 speakers???

I did audition them.
Quite impressive “little” speakers! Even with complexe music they manage to produce a detailed sound and a rather nice soundstage.

For that matter, anyone heard the A5? The early buzz is very favorable.

Yes, have heard the A5s twice now, spending around 3 hours in front of them each time and most recently with a full 500-series rig, like my own. On one hand, they’re quite impressive with high frequency extension unlike anything I’ve heard before giving rise to aural ‘tricks’ such as sound coming from the sides of the room and even behind you. At the same time, I found the all-important midrange to exhibit distracting coloration or chestiness, and the bass to sometimes be unsatisfying. Am currently hunting for new speakers and was very interested in Magico but have now moved on to other contenders I think…

Gosh, do you like high quality bass that is not boomy!

I always prefer low quality bass that is boomy.

That’s a pretty snide remark.

Adressing it at face value I would say that choosing speakers is partly a question of of which compromises to make. Some people are not very concerned about the bass. Some crave a lot of bass and are willing to accept boominess to get it. What I was tying to convey was that I want a lot of bass but not at the expence of quality.

The M series are amazing speakers. There are not a lot of speakers on market capable of such a low level of distortion.

The A series are obviously not capable of providing the low end definition the M or S series do.

But, from what I heard, you’ll get “more bass” from the A series…

Everybody enjoys “bass”, trust me
But not everybody enjoys “greasy bass”…

Some, like me, even prefer speakers that rolls off the low end rather then having this uncontrolled bass that makes a piano sound like a double bass.

Well, having that is quite easy : by moving the listening position against a wall!

Not sure I understand what a “lot of bass” means. But I suppose you want to get what’s actually recorded : no more, no less. That has a cost…

Massive Attack is fun, but is far from being the perfect music to evaluate a speaker’s low end…

Piano, double bass, organ, etc… acoustic music with harmonic richness, is more appropriate.

If you enjoy piano, symphonic music, choirs, well recorded rock or jazz, etc. Magico S and M series do wonders.

If your thing is electronic music and impactful low end perhaps a pair of REL subwoofers could do the trick.

But, whatever your system is, your room frequency response, at a specific listening position, will be the limiting factor.

No, I was using a very open and not at all snide form of humour called ‘mockery’.

(“Noun - teasing and contemptuous language or behaviour directed at a particular person or thing.”)

The reason I mocked your post was because you stated that you appreciate a high quality bass response, which is a circular argument - no one wants a low quality bass response, so reversing your circular statement is inherently amusing (to me).

I am sure that many with me have now been extremely impressed by your command of the english language of not your rudeness.

Anyone with a more generous attitude would understand that I was expressing a preference for quality over quantity.

Well, in the UK mockery is quite normal.

We have a popular TV programme here called ‘Mock the Week’.

It’s not rudeness.

I am considering M2s for these reasons.

Hans

You do not think using ’contemptuous language or behaviour directed at a particular person…’ is rude?

Hans

Merriam-Webster definition of ’contemptuous’ - manifesting, feeling, or expressing deep hatred or disapproval.

Great choice!

Considering its impedance curve, a NAP500DR could be needed.

I auditioned the A3, S3 MkII and M2 paired with a Soulution 711, a rather capable amp.

@HansW
What is your current system electronics and speakers? Pardon me if already discussed.
