Mamod - Closing Down...?

Sad news -

“Due to spiralling costs and many other issues, the company have decided to wind down operations and begin closing the business.”

Can’t say I’m too surprised they’ve been pushing prices far too much in comparison to the competition that is far more accurate in operation.
Sold them for years but not as good as Wilesco.
It’s just a name that’s stuck.

Ran out of steam.

“As the new owner of Mamod, I’ve faced significant challenges over the past year. Upon taking over, I discovered the landlord planned to raise the rent from £24k to £38k per year, plus extras, totalling over £40k annually. Additionally, he demands a full repairing lease, making us responsible for all repairs, despite neglecting the property for nearly 30 years. He also requires a personal guarantee, which I cannot provide as it would jeopardize my own home.”

Pretty clear that a money grabbing Landlord is the key to this.

Not so chuffed now.
They should have started making these.

Maybe not. :joy:

Sad news indeed. Me and my brother still have ours from 50 years ago. Still working as well.

Perhaps a fair comment, but it would be a commercial lease, so it may not be a straight forward as it appears.

Very disappointing when long established businesses fail.

Caveat emptor - full due diligence ought to have addressed all aspects of the lease before purchase.

Without specific details, the rent increase may be the first over an extended period, which is usual for commercial property, the rent being the same for three or even seven years.
It seems surprising that the new owner didn’t arrange for the ‘neglected building’ to be brought up to date ahead of purchasing the business.
The lease may also not have been assignable to the new owner, so new lease and new terms.

A hard brush with the modern reality, maybe…?

Agreed - some degree of naivety, perhaps…?

Let us hope that the new owners wish or hope, to continue in some, reduced form comes to pass… :hand_with_index_finger_and_thumb_crossed:

This may now be the way forward for Mamod models & engines -

Perhaps part of the problem.

If they are still going strong after 50 years, why buy new?

I’ve built many of the kit versions when the punters gave up.
Not exactly rocket science very old rough tech.
Other makes offer much more realism at very much better prices.
It’s just a buzzword Mamod. Dinky or Hoover etc.

Built in obsolescence annoys most consumers but, without it, most manufacturers wouldn’t last long, probably leaving the consumer even more annoyed.
