As I understand it the glass is different and doesn’t have the damping pads. Did this have any bearing on performance? Do you use yours with a base board or just spiked to the floor?
If you’re making that claim then unless you can provide proof then it is a groundless claim and it’s just your own opinion. Which is fine but should be mde clear and not presented as fact.
TBH I don’t even understand what that means.
safety critical voice is where the audio quality and clarity of what is being transmitted poses a high risk to life if it is misunderstood, not heard or corrupted. In our case even a single syllable corrupted or lost poses a significant risk.
Let’s just say it’s people giving instructions to people driving big metal boxes way above the ground ![]()
Well no.
I followed a couple of conversations recently where a hyper expensive cable manufactures claims to be medical grade, were exposed as downright lies, with specifications and Standards quoted.
In another conversation a well known British brands claims about their unique cable characteristics were shown by an Electronics Engineer, to be relevant and measurable, only if the cable was several kilometres long.
I could go on, and on, with manufactures claims that are false or misleading.
Just as well then that it has nothing to do with hi-fi network switches! A whole different set of criteria are involved.
No the principals are exactly the same, everything you see in HD audio comes from the telecommunications industry.
Happy to discuss this, just start a separate thread as it’s way off topic now.
PS google how ADC/DAC works and how PCM evolved, it was invented in the 50’s for telecoms.
Obviously if. manufacturer publishes incorrect specs of a product which amount to deception or lies that is quite a different matter and entirley indefensible. That’s just plain factual lies though. It’s not my understanding of what is meant by ‘snake oil’.
Let’s not go there - it’s been done before.
All I would add here is that when you make a statement like
it’s pretty meaningless without specifying exactly what is being measured. Also, what would you messure exactly to determine the amount of digital glare in the sound, the speed of transients, tonal rendition, tunefulness etc.? These are all easily audible but to my knowledge there are no measuremets that easily directly relate to them. Of course there will be things that can be measured that will have a bearing on these qualities, but exactly what, and exasctly how those values translate into what is audible is far from clear and a very specialised area of interest and of concern only to engineers involved in research and development of such hi-fi products.
Google Fourier transform methods, differing types can be used to measure all those you have listed in both the time and frequency domains.
Thanks I’ll take a look.
My ears are measuring devices and my measuring devices tell me I can hear a difference between different types of switches and cables. Personally, I don’t really need any more proof than that!
Just had a very quick look and I can see where you’re coming from.
I would argue from a lyaman’s point of view that I can hear clear differences between say a LPS and a SMPS on a router. If Fourier analysis indicates no measurable differences then one can conclude either that the analysis is missing something important or that I am imagining differences when there are none. I believe my ears rather than measurements, however sophisticated. Apart from anything else, if a LPS supply on a router sounds less musical than a SMPS, which it does to me, then it’s no consolation to me to know that Fourier analysis says it’s the same!
I’m not saying that people can’t hear differences, I’m pretty much a subjectivist myself. I buy something and listen to it for a few weeks to see if I like it.
I just argue against people claiming things like “switch xxx reduces transport borne noise which reduces intermodulation distortion in the DAC” That is a statement that could very easily be proven but no evidence is ever put forward.
xxx vs yyy sounds better to me is 100% valid but xxx vs yyy is better because it eliminates flippityflop distortion in the quantum entangler is not, without proof to backup the claim.
Ah, but your eyes (and wallet) may may help your ears to lie to your good self ![]()
Having said that I too think (!) I can hear some differences, small though they usually are, with cables.
Any chance of getting back on topic?
I’m not sure my ‘ears’ have ever really lied to me. They may have confused me a few times in quiet conversations but that’s about it.
Just because something is expensive doesn’t necessarily mean I’m expecting it to sound better. I recently had two power blocks on test, the Chord M6 (£2,500) and a Chord P6 (£600). I bought the Chord P6 because I thought it sounded better. No expectation bias involved there just simple listening.
Ha !!! Yep, that’s true. ![]()
Nostalgia eh !
P.S. I used one very happily for many years ![]()
I doubt it…
I suspect one of the reasons the Target racks got less praise was because of their design. The design seemed more like a piece of furniture i.e. a basic rack to support HiFi equipment. I don’t think, at the time, much thought went into how they sounded. The top shelf had spikes for a turntable but all the rest of the shelves sit on little metal corner tabs. No attempt to isolate the shelves themselves. Load it up with kit and it just couples everything to everything. The only isolating factor are the floor spikes.
As a contrast look at the Sound Organisation stands. Every shelf has four slightly spiked tabs. I also remember Roger Macer (from the Sound Organisation) saying the position of these tabs were critical to performance. Move them half an inch at they didn’t work. The SO is also structurally more rigid as it’s a perfect box. The Target isn’t.
I asked for the same glass as originally used, not sure if it wasn’t just plain float glass. I made damping pads but can’t remember what I used now, too long ago ! Mine is just spiked to the floor, I only use the boards if I’m adding a single level above the table. I also got a power supply table which is one level and fits inside the base of my record deck table without touching it. Sorry not to be of more help.
