Shame as it’s going very well up here
Just returned from the Maverick Hi Fi event in Barnsley - what a brilliant show!
Rooms full of lovely, friendly people who were keen to discuss their passion and show off their fantastic gear. The biggest surprise for me was how my partner (who isn’t a natural fit for this particular Sunday day out) said how much she enjoyed it! Overheard saying “I’ve learnt more in 3 hours today than in 15 years with Graham!”
Nice to meet up with Duncan from this forum and appreciate the wow of his amazing system. Also, Barnsley Hospice who benefited from the raffle funds is an amazing charity and it was quite brilliant to see people digging into their pockets for extra donations.
ATB Graham.
Nice to see you today.
Glad you had a great day.
Great friendly show today, lots of great equipment on display, generating great sounds, highly recommended if you’ve never been, you’re definitely missing out.
Good to meet up with @Dunc from this forum and appreciate his amazing system.
A few more from today.
A complete Tandberg system
Well done to the ladies from Barnsley Hospice, who did a great job.
Looking forward to 2025!
Some very different systems there. Love the Tandberg setup.
A Philips cd104
Some great systems on display today, unfortunately due to time restraints, couldn’t get to see all the rooms, but managed a good 80% but a wide spectrum of equipment to listen too, from well looked after favourites from the past, to state of the art present day, home made to modded.
The Tandberg system sounded great and while I was there, the cassette deck was in use, it was quite amusing, to watch, some of the faces, when he changed tapes over!
If you ever get the chance to visit a similar event in your area, go and support them, its easy to forget, that all the systems on display are all enthusiast owned like Duncan who have taken the time to dismantle, transport, setup and give fellow enthusiasts, the chance to listen to their pride and joy, then do it all in reverse!
Thanks to Duncan once again, and looking forward to next year.
We are both still buzzing from the weekend.
All home, room full of boxes.
Lovely response from people about how it sounded.
Many came back quite a few times.
We played mainly what the visitors all streamed from qobuz.
No fancy ethernet, just a £30 wifi box and straight into the vivaldi.
No fancy mains, just a cheap multi plug.
Nothing fancy really, just plonked it all down and off we went.
Room was a bit lively, especially for the bass. The rear port was spot on the same height of the bed side shelf.
Couldn’t move the speakers any further out as it was already close. But we did the best we could, and as said i think we did a grand job really.
Vics reel 2 reel also went down very well, and sounded great.
We are certainly thinking about doing it all again next year.
As we are totally mad.
Cheers dunc
Barking mad……but well done👍
Full marks for commitment. Obviously a great event. Hope you found time for a Barnsley Chop. Deserve one for all that effort.
Over £8400 raised for the charity. Amazing
Well done, Dunc.
It wasn’t just me lol.
There was about 40 rooms to stagger round.
But a supper result
Had a great time at my first MAV ( well it was everyone’s first but you know what I mean).
There was a genuinely good feel of camaraderie among attendees and the exhibitors really did everything to explain and demonstrate their systems.
I spent nigh on 45 minutes in Dunc’s room and his system sounded great with a scale and punch I hadn’t experienced before.
Overall considering systems were set up just the day before in hotel rooms the sound was quite astonishing. I suppose that’s because they are real world systems in real world enough rooms.
Thoroughly enjoyed it and I doubt it will be my last trip over to it.

Glad you enjoyed what we managed to cobble together.
Sorry i am not sure still who you was on the day, as so many people.
But as you saw it’s a fantastic thing to do, and visit. I hope more go next year.
Perhaps, we should wear badges…or maybe not
Agree with @Sloop_John_B & @Gazza, considering all the logistic’s involved, size of rooms etc, there were some amazing sounds on view, nothing was too much trouble, whatever you wanted to listen too either streamed, on vinyl, R2R or Cassette, no problem, everybody happy to oblige, and demonstrate whatever you were interested in.
Roll on to 2025
That’s exactly how it should be.
We played everything we got asked to play.
What ever volume you wanted, etc.
Even tracks that i knew would certainly sound not so good in the room, due to bass in the room.
But as said it was more just for fun. Plus getting to hear your favorite tracks on different systems.
Well done Dunc. What a mission! But a bet it was worth it. And raising the money for charity is fantastic!
It was like nothing else Dan.
Completely worth it, great fun.
Saturday night was also good.
After a few beer’s and food. You get the chance to go round other rooms for a listen.
We opened up our room later on. Many came in, but the guys next door from sounds solid came in. We played many tracks very loud for them, but on certain track of ACDC went down very well with one guy.
He said it was like being back hearing them live at the front of the crowd. His arm hairs were all standing up, he absolutely loved it.
It made my ears ring for about 10 minutes, but i said to Vic afterwards, if that’s the only one that enjoys it, then seeing how happy he was, was already worth it all.
Saturday night was certainly mental and went into the early hours playing music far to loud for that time of day.
