May be binning off Roon in favour of Tidal connect .. but

I’ve been doing some detailed listening today [long over due] of Roon vs Tidal Connect. I think Tidal gives a better sound stage and is a bit tighter.

I had almost made the decision to cancel Roon when I found a problem. A favourite album at the moment is Kacy Musgrave ‘Golden Hour’. When played from Tidal through Roon, it gives me 2 versions to choose from, 44.1khz & 96khz.
When in Tidal connect - it only allows playback as ‘HIGH’ 44.1khz, despite it showing the recording is available in ‘MAX’ [96khz].

I’ve checked my subscription and there no longer seems to be a sound quality based pricing, so it seems odd that I can’t get Tidal to offer the MAX version… I’m sure this must be a setup issue somewhere. I’ve raised a support query, but wondered if anyone else has had this issue and if so how they resolved it.

TIA!

No problem here, shows as 96kHz on Tidal and plays via Connect as same on NDX2

And from naim app (when playing via Tidal Connect):

DAC has two lights on so it’s definitely 96kHz.

Hey Ian…thanks for that…
Very odd… I’m going to reset everything and try again.

Maybe a silly question, but you did install the firmware update (3.10.1) on your ND5XS2?

No, I purposefully avoided it…

The weird thing is that at one point I’m pretty sure it was streaming at MAX on some albums , but now it seems not to be doing it on any album I select.
I’ve even tried Tidal through the Naim App (uurghh) and tha twill only stream as HIGH.

Just about to reboot eveything as rebooting streamer had no affect.

If I look in Tidal, there are 3 versions

The first is Max, second High, and the last one doesnt specify (MP3 possibly) so you may just need to select a different one

which app are you using? I can’t seem to get that type of display in the tidal App (iPad)

Edit - ignore that, I can see 3 albums the same as you have, but when I select MAX it default to HIGH still … weird…

It was the tidal app on a Mac, so not quite the same, but I just tried it on my iPhone, and again I got three matches. I just searched “Kacy Musgrave ‘Golden Hour’” then filtered on albums

Just seen your edit. So I selected it in Tidal on the iPhone, and Tidal connected to Naim streamer - all worked fine

So here is tidal’s response…

Thank you for your reply. Yes, Naim is a TIDAL Connect-supported device; however, it does not support HiRes FLAC quality through TIDAL Connect.

What am I missing… I’ve also loaded tidal to my Macbook Pro (2021) and that will only stream in HIGH as well…

Frustrating… First world problems I know…

Have you tried logging out of Tidal on your Naim App, and then back in, then checking that the Naim App still shows the settings as Max

you may be on to something here -

I don’t get the same screen as you, which may be because I’m still on 3.8.2 firmware - maybe the app version is being held back because of the Streamer firmware I’m running…

Can you change the quality in the menu?

Yes , but HiFi is the highest setting.

Ah I see. Not the same on my NDX2 which is effectively the same configuration. Did you try the logging out and back in of Tidal on the Naim app?

Yes I did… the frustrating thing I that I’m pretty sure it did work at one point.

I’m really concerned about updating the firmware on my ND5 as I don’t want the sound to change. Looks like I’ll be sticking with Roon, which is fine.

I think you do need the update. It worked beautifully on mine, and gave a good SQ boost, then the Tidal Hi Res option was the icing on the cake

I’ll sleep on it… thanks so much for your help, really appreciate it!!

Tidal Max support was introduced in firmware 3.10.x. If you want it, you need to update. I also have an ND5XS2 and updated first to 3.10.0 and than to 3.10.1. That last version was much better.

Thank you… that makes sense. I guess its now a coin toss as to whether to risk the upgrade…
I’ll go and read the relevant posts…
