Hi all - First of all, sincere thanks to everyone who kindly offered help and advice (in an earlier discussion) about setting up a turntable for my 82/180 combo. It’s now spinning happily and sounding tremendous. Many thanks.
As a result, I’m now on the scrounge for a bit more guidance, please. After trying various cartridges, I finally settled on a part-used moving coil Ortofon Kontrapunkt C. It simply wiped the floor with the other carts I tried.
Sadly, this cart is no longer in production, so it will eventually need re-tipping. So, my question is, has anyone here tried re-tipping a cartridge and how did it turn out?
I’ll be interested in this as my Troika needs a retip.
I think the recommendations used to be ESCO or Goldring but it’s been years since I’ve looked into it. Last one I had retipped was a Koetsu in 2013 by northwest analogue and really didn’t like the sound when it came back.
They are never as good as original but for nostalgia they seem ok.
Goldring is the best Troika fix as they developed the internals for the same body shape with the Klyde.
So I suppose at best you get a version of a Klyde with a three point mount.
Hi,
according to the Ortofon website there is a repair service for their cartridges. There are even prices shown for several models, not for any of the Kontrapunkts, though. But I won’t hurt to ask.
I had one of my cartridges retipped by Expert Stylus a few years ago. Pretty good work and my Koetsu still sounded like a Koetsu afterwards.
Only the original manufacturer of the cartridge can get this.
Even the most super duper cartridges have sound signature variations.
I’ve heard a few identical carts sound different.
It’s the gamble like most things if you like the one you got then great but after that it’s rose coloured glasses and luck.
If I was going to do this I’d go the Goldring path they did manufacture a variation of sorts at the time.
Are you sure that Goldring made a variation of the Ortofon Kontrapunkt? According to the opening post that’s the cartridge to be retipped in the future.
If we were talking about a Troika I could see your point.
