Has anyone here experimented with the ideal length of Furutech DIY power cables?
Dealer says 1.8m sounds best and recommends not to go much shorter. I got a feeling that this just comes from a sales perspective. 1m would be long enough for me as the wall socket is very near. 0,8m extra is not cheap so if it won’t really matter I would rather go for 1m.
When Naim were designing the Powerline they found that 1.5m sounded better than a shorter length, so I guess there may be something in it and not just the dealer trying to sell you a longer (and more expensive) lead.
A power cord is not the last meter in a power grid. It is part of the loop meaning the longer cable you have and the more high quality cables you have the better. Nordost, Ansuz, Shunyata and most others including Naim talk about 1.8-2m minimum for getting as much effect as possible from a greater power cord design. If you use shorter I will then assume the effect of an expensive quality cord will be less. I also believe from my own testings that using same power cord has a greater effect that mixing them. For example my system sounds better with only Power lines than if I put a 4000 EUR power cord from another brand on one box. If I would use same 4000 EUR cord on all boxes the story might be different. I won’t try it though
Hello …
Length may vary depending on construction.
As an example:
• Shunyata’s is around 1.75m.
• Jorma Designs 1.5m.
I had a Jorma Design Duality powercable of 2m,.cut it to the prescribed 1.5m, clearly audible difference for the better.
Does anyone know, how these work? What occurs (or doesn’t) in them, that impacts the equipment? Is “design” just empirical?
e.g. Wireworld say the longer the better to take better advantage of the noise reduction design and properties…
This is how it works: People believe what they want to believe. Definitely not empirical.
Given that no one fully understands the electron, and electrons are involved in electricity, it seems impossible that anyone can fully understand how electrical cables work.
I don’t believe Furutech has any ideal length but as others have posted it is generally said that longer vs very short is ideal as the longer length will have the possibility of greater impact on the sound. I have a number of Furutech DIY cords & I chose 2M this time around. Previously I would make a specific length for the component I was planning the cord for but with the longer 2M length, I can swap things around in the future if I choose & with the heavy gauge cords, it can make for easier cable dressing (have some S55N & DPS-4.1)
I probably meant experimental.
It seems the only metric is subjective scoring. And the only theory is noise of unspecified characteristic. And therefore they are not engineered, just guessed.
The longer lengths will confusingly provide lower impedance. Allowing less resistance to the flow of electricity.
My NAP 250 sounds better since I replaced the powerline with a heavier Furutech based cable.
But of course I am in the US on 120V so the current draw is greater than for 220V
