MM card for 12s

Hi

I’ve given my old…. But great sounding modified 12s preamp to my son. But realise I have mc cards in it. And he is using mm cartridge. Anyone know if one can access mm cards?

It will depend upon which version of NAC12 it is. If it still has all the boards on knife edge connectors then you would need some knife edge MC boards, which are very rare indeed and if you could find some would likely not be in the best of health these days. However, if it’s a late NAC12 or had the phono boards connectors changed to the later pin type then you should be able to use NA322 boards for MM cartridges. These are regularly available at secondhand Naim dealers and on the usual sales sites and auction places. The latest versions were NA322/4.

Thanks for the quick response. I have the mc boards in there. Will open the lid and check.

The phono boards appear to be knife edge types. The knife edge boards are very hard to find indeed! Alternatively, if you were to, say, have it serviced at Naim or Class A then you could ask whether they could fit pins for the phono boards so you could use regular NA3XX phono boards. My own NAC12 is like this as it makes phono board changes much easier.

I did have it completely refurbished by naim some years ago. …… hey ho. I’ll have to get him a mm pre until he can stump up the money for an MC cartridge. Thanks again.

That’s a shame, it would have been the ideal time to have the phono board connections changed to pins. I guess you could try ringing around some of the more likely Naim dealers and seeing whether they have any early knife edge MM boards rattling around in any drawers or cupboards.

The irony is. I’m pretty I have had them at some point. But yes I’ll follow up your suggestion. Thanks again.

Or just get a small/cheap Creek OBH-8mk2 - they work well with Naim, maintaining the groove.

Good idea

Just following up on this I bought my son a cheaper mm preamp ( before I got the other suggestion. And now can send it back.

Forgive wot might be a stupid question but… the mm is plugged in to the tape input and level is way too high. If it was to be plugged in to the gram input would I have to remove the mc cards ?
