Apologies if this is covered somewhere else on the forum - I wasn’t able to see a concise response anywhere.
For those using CD rips on a NAS, is anyone a big use / promoter of MP3Tag? I’d like something to export album names plus some metadata into a spreadsheet so I can track what I have and still need to acquire. DBPa doesn’t seem to have that native function on a Mac, and everyone recommended MP3Tag earlier. Before I go off and spent the €25 wanted to hear some thoughts. Thanks!
I’m not sure about Mac but on Windows you can use dBpoweramp to write all your metadata to a file by using the the convert function and just adding the write metadata.
I use dBpoweramp to convert formats (WAV - FLAC) as the dBp converter seems faultless.
Although dBp is good for basic editing, I prefer MP3Tag for more serious metadata editing.
I’m sure others will say something different, but I’ve always done it that way and see no reason to change.
Mike….I’ve done that as well in the past but ran into a few problems (nothing major) but some tags are mapped differently in dBpoweramp to MP3TAG so you just need to check what you are changing and be 100% before committing. Sure you probably know that but the OP may not
Yes I’ve seen some variations, but nothing that can’t be changed.
As for your comment about 100% sure before committing, I always keep a copy of the original file until satisfied the converting & editing is complete. (my industry training)
You’re right Roger. I’m sure I once use Copy Selected Tags through a Clipboard Switcher to paste into a spreadsheet. Just tried that with Mac OS26 - no dice. The Metadatic clipboard no longer seem to export. I ended up using MP3Tag to export file names for playlist compatibility. DGP
I didn’t answer the OP question on copy/paste to a spreadsheet.
But just out of curiosity I’ve done so to check how easy, and unfortunatlly its not a simple copy/paste.
Also sorry but I’ve always been MS Windows and have been since day dot, and don’t know anything about MAC.
MP3Tag does not support direct copy/paste of tags to a spreadsheet, but it can be done if the data is exported to a CSV file.
How to do it is a bit involved but is all listed step by step in a www search.
After that, the CSV file can then be opened in any MS spreadsheet program like MS ‘Excel’ or Google ‘Sheets’
Thx Mike - that seems to be the consensus; much better metadata manipulation. Think the bonus is the export on the Mac - dBpa just doesn’t have the same feature at the application level. Think I’m going to get the trial version and see how it goes
Much the same as Mike, I’m on windows and have ‘dumped’ the tags into a csv file using MP3tag. Certainly helps with tidying up/curating tags.
The MP3Tag forum is also a quite friendly place.
I feel the £25 licence is good value - free upgrades too!
