A Chromecast receiver being required for Chromecasting was definitely confirmed by those with Qb V1 experience, most importantly Clare, of course. Are you sure you are using Chromecast now? Sorry, I do not know about this whole topic, never having owned a V1 model.

Well…Airplay is idle and I’m playing Qobuz through the Naim ap. Previously the Qb didn’t show up, and the multiroom button on the remote did nothing. Just for fun I was playing around, touched it…and the screen went to “loading” and the Qb popped up. I clicked enter and it started playing downstairs.

I’ll have to pass on this one, sorry, I am sure someone will be around shortly who knows about the V1

I guess I’m not sure how to tell if it is Chromecast? I do have this:

I must say, when I bought the Qb V1 (for half price after the V2 was introduced) part of my thought process was if I later bought another Naim, a newer unit (which became a Uniti…ha!) that it would be able to recognize and utilize the Qb. At first it appeared not as smooth as I hoped, and intended to get a Chromecast unit. Now apparently I don’t need it?

That looks like Naim multi-room in action - your Qb is simply playing what the Atom is receiving. If the Atom is playing Qobuz via the Naim App, you’re not using Chromecast.

Glad you are happy , sounds as if it was a very nasty road getting there.

Best wishes

Getting there… frustrations still arise

So is it Airplay?

No, it’s the Naim App serving up content to your Atom and linking that content to your Qb - all over wi-fi.

You can group AirPlay 2 compatible devices (and that does include Mu-so v1 and Atom) in a multiroom system via compatible Apple Apps, but you don’t need to in this instance. More here, if you’re interested:

So, since Qobuz is playing CD quality or hi res, that means of playing would be better quality? And will the V1 play hi res this way?

Streaming via the Naim App will deliver better quality, yes.

The Mu-so V1 does support high-resolution files - I have a Qb 1 myself, and enjoy a range of high-res files directly streamed from our music server. HOwever, if you’re streaming high-res from Qobuz to your Atom and then multi-rooming to your Qb1, it may occasionally struggle with some 24/192 content (the odd temporary drop out).

Caveat on all the above is, of course, the quality of your network connection - both externally and internally!

That is another thing: streaming from the Qobuz app in hi res is choppy even through the Atom. When streaming Qobuz through the Naim app it’s fine. But the Naim app is streaming that hi res when the album in Qobuz is hi res though through the Naim app…

This is where the native Naim integration of music services - accessible via the App - comes into its own. Even the most robust internet connection can suffer from occasional drop-outs – something Naim’s latest-gen streaming system is designed to minimise.

Essentially (and this is the super-simple version), it has sufficient memory to buffer up to five minutes of audio. When you play Qobuz (or TIDAL) from the Naim App, it plays from that buffer. When you use Chromecast or AirPlay, you’re getting the raw stream, including any fluctuations due to connectivity issues.
