Music while you work

When I’m learning something new that requires my undivided attention, music becomes a distraction as my brain is only really capable of concentrating on one task at a time. I don’t think that us humans are truly capable of multitasking, as when I am busy posting on this fine forum and listening to my dear wife, I am incapable of doing both tasks at the same time. I am often the recipient of “what did I last say?” to which I am a totally oblivious seeking redemption from scorn. I would suggest that @johnmorris67 refrain from any distractions during this precious time in your life and concentrate on absorbing the information presented to you as there will be plenty of opportunity to listen to music thereafter :relaxed:

There are actually scientific studies that counter the entire idea of humans being able to engage in “multitasking”.

Were they also listening to music whilst conducting the study?
(Sorry, I couldn’t resist that!)

It also depends on the brain type, people with more adhd-ish types of brain wiring generally perform better when there is a degree of environmental noise / distraction.

I do have an official adhd diagnosis so perhaps i should consider the Naim forums to be therapeutic in that regard yes.

Do you think it could be tax deductible?

Exactly – neuro-diversity makes one-size-fits-all ideas of working one of the greatest stupidities!!! And much of our education system is a daily nightmare for a considerable minority of pupils…

“Follow the science.”

Of course, as I indicated, the reason I can’t do it is because I am so interested in the music that it is distracting. For those who are less focused on the music, it is likely not as distracting.

Once I realised it, my school career was over* (traditional schools are bad places for people who associate / relate more than follow logical patterns and or can memorise words). I since then have been in good jobs because the positive side** of adhd. Since I have been in good jobs, I payed more tax! Yeehaa.

Kids are more like my wife, which is good for them, my wife and for myself.

*I did my music studies after I’ve been working for a few years and - surprise - music / art is a great place to be e.g. specialising in Improvisation.

**Ability to analyse very complex problems, ability to find solutions for complex problems, ability to filter data (literal data, photos, sound, peoples faces) very quickly etc …
