Hi all. Around 3 weeks ago my muso 2 started to cut out after a few hours playing radio and just hisses. Will only restart and play after being unplugged. Tried a full reset but still does not sort it. Unit is around 3 years old. Any ideas most welcome.
Hope it turns out OK, ours working no problem, never heard of an issue like this

As you have tried reasonable steps with the Mu-so, next Try powering off your NTU/NTD box which sits prior to your router for 5mins, and then power on your NTU/NTD , in an attempt to reset your network port at the ISP. After this do a power recycle on your router too.
I have a Bentley Mu-so 2 that I thoroughly enjoy.
Thankyou. Gutted as love the muso 2.
Hi. I am not sure i have this but will take a look. Thankyou for the advice. Its such a strange issue i fear its more an issue with the muso itself.
Hi, I just wanted to chip in because I encountered the same issue with my Mu-so 2 (also approx. 3 years old) this past weekend and wanted to share my experience.
Saturday: the unit became unresponsive during normal use and had a continuous loud hiss like you described. Volume controls and changing sources didn’t do anything, it was as if the unit had crashed. After power-cycling everything seemed back to normal, until shortly later the same hiss and unresponsiveness happened again.
It’s definitely not a network issue, in my case as least, because it happens on every source I used (internet radio/RCA/HDMI). I thought there might be a firmware issue so tried to do a factory reset, and that was its own hair-pulling adventure where I messed it up and got a flashing red light of death, but ultimately I got it back up and running Saturday evening.
All seemed good until Sunday daytime when the hiss problem started up again, with the unit working after being powered down and back up, only to cut out again after a while.
Ideally I’d like to perform a manual firmware update, or rollback to a previous firmware version to rule out any problems with the version currently installed (4.5.0.6644), but frustratingly Naim don’t make the update files publicly available.
It could well be that the unit is failing, but the only thing I could think of that’s changed is the hot UK weather we’ve been having recently. I couldn’t easily find the operating temperature range for the Mu-so 2, but the Focal Mu-so Hekla manual suggests that product has a range of 5-35C so I assume they’re fairly similar.
I noticed the web config for the Mu-so 2 also displays the CPU temperature, and mine looked to be reaching the high 40s during normal usage. You can find the diagnostics by going to the Mu-so’s IP address while connected to the same network. Its IP address (looking like 192.168.0.xx) can be found in the Naim app, under System settings>Network settings.
LONG STORY short I stuck a room fan next to the Mu-so 2 and its topping out at 39/40C under normal usage, and I haven’t had any hissing cut outs during normal fairly continuous usage since Sunday afternoon, including all of today working from home. I’m not saying the issue is definitely being caused by overheating, but touch wood it’s not happened since I started trying to actively cool the unit. If all else fails you could try this, but again the issue might ultimately be a sign its starting to fail. I’ll be similarly gutted if mine’s on its way out.
Thats really interesting. I always thought heat. I have been in contact with naim and to date they have been helping with network approach but thats coming to an end now. I think its dying and given its age i wont be getting another. You seem pretty technical, do you think it might be repairable? Naim technical dont seem aware of our issue. I will speak to them again tomorrow with your info and post again here. Stu
Unfortunately its a bit beyond me to say whether it’s repairable, I’m just of an age where troubleshooting tech into a more-or-less working state used to be an essential skill! I hope the information I’ve given can help the technical team narrow down the problem.
Thanks again
I could be wrong here, but I thought the 2 was reparable?

I very much hope so i love the unit.
Just checked the temp and it was running at 49.
Yes its a very hot day but still, it also does it oj cold days.
Cheers
Mine said 60 degrees to my surprise, ouch, but we have a daily 35-37 where we are in the Pfalz, Germany.
Martin
It cut out at 49. Put cooling fan on it and it dropped to 43 and has kept running
@THREADS Glad to see that you have found a cool solution !
Is your Muso-2 located in an enclosed shelf/cupboard ?
I understand europe is experiencing an unprecedented heatwave.
In an Australian summer, we can get 15+ consecutive days above 35C sometimes in that period we get 42-44C for multiple days. So I am mindful to ensure all my naim gear get good clear airflow. We also have central ducted air conditioning, a must-have “downunder”.
My Mu-so2 sits on a bedroom table with clear convection access for it’s rear heat sinks.
Hi…. Nice pun.
Yes weather in uk very hot (for us) but its been an issue for some time. The unit sits a 750mm high glass side table, in a corner with approximately 300mm clearance to its left, clear to right and 100mm at rear. Its a large open plan room generally sitting at around 22 degrees. It cut out again yesterday at 46 (cpu) with the fan on it. Stu
At the time of cut out, does the rear heat sink feel warm to your hand ?
Do you have USB or HDMI attached devices ?
It feels a little warm but ok to me. Nothing plugged in at all. Can happen using radio or tidal via phone app.
