Must-see movies

Now that everything is available all the time, the choices are overwhelming. I fire up Netflix or Amazon Prime and I don’t know where to begin. Reviews and ratings are all but useless when you don’t know who’s doing the recommending. But this little community has never steered me far wrong with gear, music and TV. So please share five of your favourite movies and consider it a service to us decidophobics:

Here are my mildly pretentious suggestions:
Three Colors trilogy (dir. Kieslowski) - I’m cheating from the off by counting this as one movie.
Trainspotting (dir. Boyle)
The Secrets In Their Eyes (dir. Campanella)
City Of God (dir. Lund/Mereilles)
The Lives Of Others (dir. Von Donnersmarck)

Sadly, he didn’t make a green, white and gold!

Hmm. I thought there might be more film fans here. Oh well…

It’s very hard on tge spur of the moment to draw up a list. These are the ones that do suggest themselves as “must see” as opposed to just being good films standing out from the crowd - but there are others!

The Unbearable Lightness of Being
Betty Blue
Leon
Amelie
2001: a Space Odyssey
The Exorcist
Kill Bill (vols 1+2)

I’ve seen and enjoyed all these apart from Kill Bill 2.

Now that’s a list! There’s a bunch of these I haven’t yet seen, so my must-see list grows.

BTW, who’s the new avatar? Loren, maybe? You seem to have started something with B&W shots of women.

Great call on Dodes’ka-den. I saw that on BBC2 about 150 years ago, and it’s stayed with me.

Here’s a huge favourite of mine, which probably strikes a chord with many forumites:

“We want the finest wines available to humanity. And we want them here, and we want them now!”

That’s a good call. Back when the film was released I read all the Delacorta books. Must give it another viewing soon.

Must-see in the visceral sense of images and in overall handling of two basic similar stories.
Both blowing things up and dispatching of characters in imaginative ways.
