NAC 332 headphone output channels flipped the wrong way around

Through my main speakers both the left & right channels are correct. However through my headphones both channels are flipped over the wrong way around. Can anyone shed any light on this? Has my internal headphone stage inside my NAC332 been wired wrong at the factory?

kind regards,

Stephen

@Stephen_Tate Anything is possible. Are you sure you connected your speakers correctly? Are your headphones wired correctly?

Have you got the inputs swapped left to right and the speakers swapped left to right so making the speakers correct and the headphones wrong?

Hi Jaybar,

My speakers and cables are absolutely connected 100% correct.

When i listen through my headphones left is right and right is left. This will have nothing to do with how the speakers are wired, although as i understand it, Naim changed the orientation with the NC stuff.

I re soldered with my new connectors supplied with my NC250 to coincide with this change.

No. This has nothing to do with how the speakers are wired. You can disconnect the power amp from the preamp entirely and you will still be left with this same oddity.

ah, i meant the source input to the 332. But of course the 332 output to power amp input would cause another swap.

or try putting the headphones on the other way round?

Just to clarify here: same headphones used on 5Si, XS2 and SN3 throughout the years, and so i know it’s not those. My finger is firmly pointing at the 332.

I would let your dealer know. IIRC there was a similar issue some years back posted on here, with a piece of Naim kit where the hp channels had accidentally been reversed, so it’s definitely a possibility that’s the issue.

Well I sympathise Stephen, I bought a pair of legacy connector cables 00-010-0248 left and right to connect my 332 to a NAP300. The cables have red and black markers to show right and left, but the right channel is completely silent when they are used as intended between 332 and NAP300. It seems somebody forgot the pin swap needed to the NAP300 CH2 input when they were soldered up. However, between 333 and 332 both channels work, confirming they were wired in the regular sense of XLR cables.

Hi Richard,

I will contact my dealer first thing. This particular unit is only 2 weeks old from brand new. I thought maybe i was doing something incorrectly with a setting in the menu somewhere and so it seems not. I was just beginning to enjoy things here, always the way.

Sounds like you were sent the wrong cables. Did you have them changed?

Hi Stephen,

no I haven’t returned the cables yet. I ordered them over the internet from a dealer in Stockton on Tees, but I live in Winchester so will need to send them back (or get the soldering iron out). The cables were bought while my 17 year old NAP300 was being serviced, so I had them for a while before discovering they were not right.

You might wonder why I bought them from a dealer so far away. The local Portsmouth or Chandlers Ford based dealer (dealer A) asks £518 for two cables whereas the Stockton on Tees dealer (dealer H) asked £259 for a pair. Dealer A shows a picture on its website of Superlumina cables for connecting 222 or 332 to NAP300 which is clearly not what one gets for £518. I sent them a message on their chatline but received no reply and the misleading picture has not been taken down as of 30th September 2027.

It is a minor annoyance really, because the 332 is a truly excellent preamplifier. I hope you enjoy your purchase when you get it sorted out.

Could well have been my 252 where the L and R are the wrong way when connected to the din connector. I just dont use that din to connect my HPA to.

@Stephen_Tate Did you reach your dealer?

Yup.:slightly_smiling_face:

@Stephen_Tate What did they say? Will you be getting a new 332?

Thanks for asking. I’m dealing with it directly with my dealer, and i’d rather keep the details of that conversation private. I try to show my dealer a little respect and keep these matters between us. Hopefully it’ll be resolved soon.

@Stephen_Tate Hope it all goes well. BTW when things finally get working, you might want to explore setting the system to instant on, if you have not done so already. Better SQ and more stable. System automation still has lots of issues. At least for me.

The 332 headphone amp is quite good I have found. I am driving Focal Utopia without issues.

My system remains on 24/7.

Hi Jabar,

When i have the balance shifted to the left-hand side of the dial with headphones the music goes to the right-hand side headphone and vice versa.

Is this the same with your 332?

Many thanks

@Stephen_Tate I don’t listen to my headphones often but when I do there is no balance shifting as you outline.
