I noticed an ad on US Audiomart for a Nac 552/PS previously owned by Lou Reed. Under $10K but will surely need service. I wonder what else he had in his system?
He had an LP12.
Some endorsement that
Many, many years ago I interviewed Lou Reed in London. It was a disaster – he resolutely refused to answer any of my questions and nicked all my fags. What a rotter! His hatred of hacks, and British hacks particularly, was well known and he spent an hour being mega passive-aggressive.
I didn’t know at the time he was an audiophile, and that he really loved the Linn LP12. Had I known that, it might have been a good entree into a decent conversation (I’d had a Sondek myself for about 18 months at that point). As it was, I came away with absolutely nothing – fortunately my editor had encountered Reed himself, and was very understanding.
He had a full Naim system IIIRC. Many years back , after doing the Montreal Show, I headed down to NYC to meet up with Chris Koster of NANA. One of the things we had scheduled for that visit was to pay a visit to Lou Reed to just check over his Naim system. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, the visit to LR’s place got cancelled at the last minute
What a Perfect Day !
Ten minutes of that and I’d have told him to take a walk on the wild side.
i see what you you did there lol

Some years ago I bought an olive HC that was owned by Slash. But a 552 owned by Lou Reed, wow.
Those were the days. Sigh.
I’ve never managed to buy any Naim kit with known musician or celeb provenance (although I guess that around these parts Julian was a top drawer celeb). Nearest I’ve got was Peter Sellers’ Quad system (which I still have bar the AM3 AM tuner) and a pair of JBL 4311s that were owned by Martin Birch and used in his studio - again, I still have these.
Beats me that somebody would pay a premium for a box of electronics touched/used by someone ‘famous’.
Give me an undamaged box with intact seals anytime
Wow, Peter Sellers. I just watched one his movie where he was an uptight lawyer in LA and became a hippy living out of his car. He was entertaining. He had a remarkable car collection too, if I recall.
My dad bought an Austin Westminster (in the 60’s) owned by Bernard Delfont.
I think he was some sort of theatrical celebrity or other.
He was an entertainment promoter
Sweet Naim.

AM3s are a bit of a rarity. Easier to use than the previous models as they were self powered. I have one but don’t use it as the rf environment is so hostile now. Caroline have a good signal now on 648 so maybe I’ll drag it out
Yes, it sold for a surprising amount of money to a chap in HK. I still have the matching FM3, 33, and 303.
I have a FM 2 to go with it, which is in the same ‘box’ as the FM 3 but with valve innards and again self powered. Quad no longer service the old valve tuners which is a shame.
One of my demo tracks is Power & Glory from Lou’s album Magic & Loss.
I wonder if Lou took his own albums when he demoed the system.
