It was certainly a factor in my move from OC to NC, particularly when NC prices are heading in the other direction.
Fortunately, overall, I’m happier with the NC kit active. It was a direct swap at the end of the day, so feel I got the timing right last year.

You’re best off buying used if it residual values are important. I got my 500DR for £6k. My ND555 for under £8k and so on.
Will it go down in value? Of course it will. What do you expect?
By buying used,.same with cars or anything like that then you don’t loose as much.
But some people have everything new. That’s just how they are. Nothing wrong with either.
I haven’t seen 500 DR series kit for much lower than what I paid. Anyhow, it’s great and here to stay. I don’t feel any need to change anything nowadays.
A full 500DR system is superb and I am lucky to have one.
It’s different depending on where you live too. In the UK there are much more used products which push down the pricing. Where I live you see 5-series maximum once per year.
I don’t have a problem if enjoying life come with a cost. What shall I do with hard earned money otherwise. Put it in the bank and wait for death to arrive?

The beauty of buying OC kit new was that there was always loads available second hand, ex demo or very lightly used. So it was easy to negotiate a discount on new boxes.
Removed the depreciation for year 1. nDAC aside, only 1 of our boxes wasn’t brand new (and it was < 6 months old and basically unused, so pretty much “open box” status).
NC kit also depreciates rapidly, with a 250NC available right now for £3.8K (40% depreciation since launch).
Not a naim specific issue, most brands plummet over 24 months.
Will not be very long before you can get NC kit for 50% retail. At the moment most used kit is from dealers - trade ins, ex demo. Once those who purchase used sell on, then prices will drop that next tier down.
NC250 for £3 an absolute steal.

I think one major aspect of this wonderful hobby of ours that nobody has mentioned yet, is the pleasure our systems give us.
I spend a serious amount of time listening to my system and albums.
Take great pleasure from hunting down albums and artists and building my library.
However, it’s the listening to these wonderful artists and works that I believe is very important for good mental health. You can listen to whatever you want, depending on your mood and your library is always there.
I also enjoy reading about new artists and their history, etc.
There is no doctor on the planet that could do this for your well being, day in, day out! What price do you put on that!
I feel very fortunate to have my system, built up over time and listening to albums.
I could , and often do listen for hours and hours.
I think it’s one of the healthiest pastimes to have and love.
That’s what I believe anyway

I’ve purchased the original Rogers LS3/5a back in the late 70’s
They were less than €300 and a lot of money for me at that time.
Had I kept them, they would have created a profit.
I always take care of my kit, handle with gloves, no scratches, original packing etc..
Used stuff but Mint condition is good. I’d hardly never buy molested equipment.
Rogers ls3/5a. Expensive relatively, when I bought them. I sold them a couple of years ago to a friend who had been asking for years for me to sell. They were needing new treble units but he still paid a crazy price for them. The only other thing I am likely to make on is the Nait 2 from the same period. Anything else I have bought, even pre owned, I have had serviced so unlikely to recover costs.

Despite firmwaregate, naim amps are superlative and OC have no software or smarts to go wrong.
Yup always a few exceptions! There’s probably some Japanese hi fi gear that’s quite collectible these days – stuff I could have had in my college dorm room 45 yrs ago!

After all I’d read about the RI 101 mk2 and Vitus in general, I auditioned one for a week which was offered to me at a very attractive price. I thought it was a lovely amp but for me didn’t quite manage to topple my 52/300dr that I had at the time. My dealer put it down to my sbls not being a good match to show the strengths of the Vitus. He might well have been right, but the sbls work so well in our smallish living room at the time I wasnt really interested in trying alternatives.
Agree…I have suspicion though…if a full resistive ladder was transplanted in ..it would change the presentation of the 552 possibly making it brighter…its already somwhat hot - sort of compensating… I would love to hear the difference. The 300 series I have heard seem to image better and sound more extended up high. I know Naim put allot of effort into getting the sonic signature/foot print just right…so re-engineering the 552 could be tricky.
The SBLs are never the weak spot. The show everything. The only downside could be the bass - if the amp is bass light, what I do not think he is.
A nice read. 1 box vs 5 boxes and a very close run thing.
That’s why I now have a Vitus, I was only at 202/200 level so it was equivalent to a big jump up the Naim range for less £££ and much more simplicity.
